I'd Rather Get To Know You Than Small Talk

I like it when someone says 'how are you?', they actually care to know, and not only a formality to "break the ice" with.

Unfortunately, it has become a standard informality type of statement.

Case in point, I asked a co-worker today. "Hey! How ya doing?" She didn't look at me and said "Good Good" and kept on walking. So.. I stopped her with "Really? Good Good? Not just Good or Great or even Fantastic?" she then realized she made an informality and apologized.

I could not agree with you more. Just say hello and be done with it if that is how you're going to be.

You are absolutely right. We are all guilty of that, unfortunately.
A true peeve of mine...but how do you ask "How are you?" and let the hearer know that you aren't being superficial?

I think we should give them full attention when they reply, and if they were close friends, we should be able to see through their eyes if they're doing well or not.

I normally throw them a curve ball and say"how are you? The family? Kids?"
@Madeleine: True that. I've even put my hand on their arm, or hand depending on the situation, and repeated the Q in a slightly different way. Sadly, many people don't believe that anyone really wants to endure the truth of how they are.

@Lilmissassypants: Good twist! Maybe even inquire about some situation you're aware of in their life. :)

My problem is, I'm so guarded, I'm hard to get to know.

We all are *hugs*

I know that feeling. Most of the time these days, it is a formality. In the age of one line text, people don't seem to enjoy conversations anymore.
Hope I get to talk to you.
