There's no evidence of pirates using the Skull & Bones, ever. It is a symbol used by German Hussars going back to the Prussian armies of Frederick the Great.
So I've read before. Pirates usually just flew a solid black flag to symbolize anarchy. But come on, don't tell me the Jolly Roger doesn't make ya think of scalawags and swashbucklers and whatnot.
Of course it does. Pirates flew a black flag because pirates weren't actually pirates but "privateers." They were hired by one government to secretly raid the colonies of other countries. Naval tradition says you fly the colours of the country you represent. Hence, privateers couldn't be identified because of their black flag.
@BlueMetalChick: I understand. Painting can be hard; my experience of it is painting miniatures, so there's tiny surfaces and details involved. Proper painting must be even worse
@Kiwi-Dan: Oh man, painting small things sounds even harder. I had to paint for art class in high school. I got good grades because I at least tried. My favorite part was at the end of class when we were supposed to get rid of all the excess paint we didn't use. I used to smear it all over a piece of wax paper and make my hands turn rainbow colors before washing it off in the sink.
