This is what I believe, and Im not going there because I deserve to, but because Im forgiven
DrSunnyTheSkeptic · 26-30, M
What an odd thing to say. It's a choice, you get to choose whether you believe in a higher power or not. I'm more like a hypocrite atheist, I don't believe in god until the plane starts falling or my exams failing.
SW-User
@DrSunnyTheSkeptic It's a choice of mine I keep myself agnostic. I consider myself doing so delusional. I only do as I know people take real meaning in religion and out of respect to that faith of theirs I want to take a meaning in their belief.

To me it's not odd. It's just a person going through life
DrSunnyTheSkeptic · 26-30, M
@SW-User You said the other reason it freaks you out is that nothing happens after death, well believing something doesn't change that unfortunately. It's comforting to thing there's a heaven for the good and hell for the wicked but the unfortunate reality is that we become nothing but fertilizer.
lamps · 22-25, F
Use the fact that you don't believe in an afterlife as an excuse to live this life to the damn fullest you possibly can. Spend that time you want to spend with your family in the afterlife right here, right now. Make an impact, make sure you make a positive impact, because your spirit lives on in the hearts of the living who remember you fondly. That's how you'll live after you die, my friend.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@lamps That's one of my core beliefs.
lamps · 22-25, F
@BlueMetalChick Same here. I don't believe in an afterlife, but I think it just makes this life more precious, it gives you a level appreciation for this life that someone who does believe in an afterlife wouldn't really have. One day I'll be a corpse rotting away somewhere, but we are more than our physical body, we're locked into someone's memory for as long as they live too.

As a person who does believe in an afterlife, I can safely say that you do have reasons to be doubtful. Even i've doubted the existence of an afterlife myself. What motivates me? I guess you can say.... fear. Fear of the possibility of me never seeing my mom and loved ones again and going somewhere where i'll suffer for all eternity. I am amazed at the fearlessness that so many atheists display. Is it truly fearlessness? I'm unsure.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User I call myself an atheist because I do not believe in god, but the only real difference between an atheist and a person of faith is what you pretend. Nobody knows if god exists and nobody knows if there is life after death. There are hypotheses, some better than others, but anyone who says that they KNOW, beyond doubt, it lying. And the difference between myself and a religious person is that I admit I am ignorant, while they make up stories to pretend they aren't.

I do very much hope you're right though, and there is an afterlife. I do think it's a very comforting and helpful thought.
lamps · 22-25, F
@SW-User Everybody's a little afraid of death, that's human. I don't believe in an afterlife, and I'm not fearless, but a belief in an afterlife would not comfort me personally.
SW-User
Honestly, same. It seems like a nice thing to believe in. But even when I try to bring myself to believe in it, I can't. My mum is super religious, and for some reason, I worry that there will be nothing there when she dies.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User I worry about this too for my own loved ones.
User41 · 36-40, M
It did for me too when I was young.

As I wasn’t brought up that way.

But over the years it’s mattered less and less.

I dont think it has any real bearing on morality, enjoying life or the fear of death.

@BlueMetalChick To me you are Liberal in how you open a conversation and want to see the conversation through. But that may be a social bias of my own ;-)
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@TexChik Look I dunno what to tell you, if you're gonna show up on my post, tell me I deserve to burn in hell for my political beliefs, but then won't even state what beliefs of mine you hate, I really can't help you. This one's on you. I've tried everything I can do.
SW-User
@TexChik Hah, I didn't read this earlier .... how is BlueMetalChick the face of radical liberalism? She's much too hard on people, if you know what 'liberal' truly means.
Allelse · 36-40, M
Yeah it'd be nice to believe that, pretty fricken disappointing if you get to the otherside and it aint what you so strongly believed it was going to be. Though I'm kind of looking forward to nothing.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
Why is a belief in God and the belief in an afterlife connected? I believe in God, but I really don't believe in an afterlife. I try to live a good life, do good deeds, for the sake of the deeds and those who I impact. I don't do them to gain anything!
helenS · 36-40, F
@samueltyler2 Christianity has shifted the focus towards an afterlife.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@samueltyler2 The two don't necessarily have to be connected but they usually are. And I'd love to believe in an afterlife but not in a god.
Dusty101 · F
I have this content feeling that I'll be just in a big dream with my mum and brother and plenty more others who you want to meet from Hollywood etc!
There will be no such thing as unhappiness!
Its like a wonderful endless dream!
SW-User
I've always had that thought since I was very young. It was the only reason why I sometimes cried in the middle of the night
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User It's overwhelming sometimes, isn't it.

You can be an atheist and have a belief in the afterlife. Religion doesn’t have a monopoly on the afterlife.

If I were you, I’d take comfort in not knowing. Just be as happy as you can be in this world, and if there’s anything beyond, you’ll experience that in time. Not knowing something can be very liberating.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User Well, true, theism I suppose is the belief in god, and you don't need to believe in god to believe in an afterlife.
I suppose I believe there is a God and therefore there is the possibility of an afterlife--bit if there is, then God sure wants to keep us guessing, doesn't He?
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
@BiasForAction He describes it in the last 2 chapters of the bible
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
first of all - i hate religious talk and since i am a lot closer to dying than you - i will keep this short and to the point. i believe in a higher power. i believe that all religions are based on the same thing - just translated from different people to match their cultures and lifes. i am not afraid to die right now because i have lived a good life. My children are fine and to be honest, no one in my life really needs me anymore. i have done my job and my heart is fine because i believe i will be taken care of. I believe there are different dimensions or levels of perception that we can't see or get to at this time that our souls go to. Prove it - you can't. but there is too much proof not to believe in it - all the near death experiences - saying the same things over and over. You need to feel this higher being in your heart and soul. Only you need to believe it. No one else can make you believe it and once you believe it - you will feel peace with yourself and in your heart. You are a good friend - and i hate to think you suffer so but your dad and family will be fine. do not worry so. Tell your best friend thank you as i believe as she does too.
TheWildEcho · 56-60, M
There's nothing forcing you to be an atheist!
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@TheWildEcho My inability to find a reason to believe in the "beyond" certainly does.
Rhodesianman · 56-60, M
You will meet again .I am an atheist but believe their is life after this just not as we know it .If you think a life time is nothing in the grand scheme of things and there has to be something else or what was the point of it all. I have seen things I cant explain .I also do believe there are people in this world with a gift able to talk to others passed from this life ,you just have to be careful as some are con-artists .
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Atheists have more faith in their silly theories than most religious people. Atheists just aren't smart enough to doubt.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@hippyjoe1955
Atheists have more faith in their silly theories than most religious people.
You mean the "silly theories" that make pretty much everything in your entire life possible? The computer you're typing on, the car you drive, you air conditioner that keeps you cool in summer and the heater that keeps you warm in winter, the medicine that cures you when you're sick, the remedies that heal your injuries, the vitamins that keep you healthy, the refrigerator that keeps your food from spoiling...all that came from "silly theories." But I guess you don't like any of those things, right? You wanna get rid of them all.
Atheists just aren't smart enough to doubt.
Are you fucking kidding me. I'm the one that doubts. You don't. You never doubt what mommy and daddy spoon fed to you as a child. You never doubt the bible, you never question your faith, you never dare challenge what you were told is true. I do. I conduct science, I seek the truth, I do the work that furthers humanity as a whole. You sit on your fat lazy geriatric fucking ass soaking up my goddamn money and screeching at me to stop what I'm doing. You're a detriment, a leech, a parasite upon the society that relies on people like me. Nobody loves you, nobody wants you, you're inherently worthless. You have no value to this world. You don't question. You're afraid to question.
basilfawlty89 · 31-35, M
@BlueMetalChick I love how dogs and wolves aren't related anymore lol
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@basilfawlty89 They never were. Obviously, God created domesticated dogs from the inception of the world because he made them to be pets for humans. Duh.
I hear ya.
It's a hard pill to swallow. It's not a happy thought which is why i find it silly when a theist tells me that i don't believe in god because i don't want it to be true.
Buddy, for real? Hell YEAH i want it to be true lol
alan20 · M
I remember a girlfriend once saying to me "If there is a god why should you feel guilty about not going to mass on Sundays. If he's worth anything, he'll prefer honest doubt over hypocrisy". Still seems sensible. Doesn't help with the feeling pf loss and loneliness, of course, but you cannot believe for those reasons.
OfflineFriend · 22-25
It's something I can't prove or debunk since there are things my body cant feel or see , so it's a chance that I have hope for it to be true , because is something I can't see and get evidence for . But although my body is very limited my mind is free to explore the universe . And that is what we must do, we chose if we believe in something that may not be true or not believe on it at all , that's the power of the human spirit
CrustyDDingus · 36-40, M
Well now I'm sad, and I'm not even an atheist. ⚰️

[c=#7700B2]I don't like the idea of thinking of a afterlife. Makes the life we are living now just seem like a test to prove you are worthy. I like the thought of this being our one life and to live it the best way you can while we are here.. Also like the thought of death and there being nothing just like it was before being born[/c]
PlumBerries · 31-35, F
[c=#7700B2]oh good lol I thought I might have offended you [/c]

@PlumBerries There's a number of phrases I use that are ad hock translations from Romanian. Some are a little bit clunky lol

I don’t think it’s about religion, it comes down to how unbothered you are, I just hope parallel universes are real and not that heaven and hell crap 😂
SW-User
@SW-User that's why you need to think ._.

So many are corrupt and wrong. What are the odds ALL are wrong? Maybe? But if one of them is right, it is your fault for not paying attention and discovering it. What is right will make sense, but sense to you, subjectively. It will make sense to you obectively

A lotta people these days just observe EXACTLY what you said and turn away. I almost did that when I used to be atheist, but I appreciate reading lots now
SW-User
@SW-User reading up on all that is actually one of my new year resolutions lol but either way I don’t like how death and the “gates of heaven/hell” is glorified; I think its all blank once you die
SW-User
@SW-User I beg to differ .-.
And I think looking at this life in a basic way will give some backing to it, but just read whenever you can. It took me 2 years ._. Just so ya know
SW-User
An afterlife makes sense to me .-.
Looking at life in a basic manner makes it more clear
reubles · 41-45, M
It should be comforting knowing that nothing happens. There's no hell or purgatory waiting for them, no riddles to solve or ferry to pay. No eternal judgement. Just lure blissful nothings, and they cant even experience that, because their brains are no longer functioning
alan20 · M
I've a lot of sympathy with that. Veer between calling myself an atheist and an agnostic. The alternatives to not believing are just so ridiculous.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@alan20 Deism seems comforting, but anything further than that gets obnoxious pretty quickly.
dumpstermeow · 41-45, F
My grandma was a devout catholic and even she told me she was afraid to die because she wasn't sure what happens.
dumpstermeow · 41-45, F
@BlueMetalChick she told me that anyone who says they know what happens after you die is lying. Wise woman.
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@dumpstermeow Sounds a lot like my big sister.
dumpstermeow · 41-45, F
@BlueMetalChick she's gone now and I'd give anything to ask her what happened.
helenS · 36-40, F
I can't believe you do really think your soul is just a complex of molecules, chemical reactions and electric signals. Your fears are unfounded.
CookieLuvsBunny · 31-35, F
@helenS To exist means to have objective reality. Why do you think the "soul" or "spirit" is real?
helenS · 36-40, F
@CookieLuvsBunny
" To exist means to have objective reality.

— In this sense God does not exist.

Please: does beauty "exist"?
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@helenS No. Just like colors do not exist. They're not a physical property of something. They're entirely dependent on the viewer's exposure to light. Just as beauty is entirely dependent on the viewer.
Terrance · 41-45, M
Completely agree
TheLoveAge · 36-40, F
Maybe try exploring God, the Universe, or something greater than yourself in other ways. Approach all this from a scientific perspective, religious & non- religious, spiritual ways, your own intuition, dreams, feelings, there’s many ways to gain new perspective regarding the limitless and the field of possibitles. It’s all available, all you need to do is make the connections :) It’s fun too🤗💜
SW-User
Im on the fence when it comes to beleiving in god right now. But i sure like thinking that they would make it to heaven. Even if i didnt
BlueMetalChick · 26-30, F
@SW-User It hurts me, emotionally and psychologically, to think about my dad entirely not existing anymore. My father is everything to me, he means the world, I'd sacrifice anything for him and there's nothing I'd ever sacrifice him for. I don't want him to just simply...vanish.
SW-User
@BlueMetalChick the people whom i love most are my little brothers. If they were to pass, i think i would commit suicide. I wouldn't be able to bare such thoughts. I really get where you're coming from.
