Think about it this way. The moon in our solar system and earth are in orbit constantly with a huge amount of energy between them given by the Sun. What do you think would happen if the Sun starts depriving the energy earth and the moon needs to stay in orbit? They both will fall out of orbit. It's the same concept with two people who love each other.

Both people have to put forth the same amount of energy into the relationship because if one person starts depriving their effort to keep the relationship in orbit, it falls.
