It is a slogan engraved over our United States Supreme Court, taken from our 14th Amendment, which states: “no State can deprive particular persons or classes of persons of equal and impartial justice under the law.” It stands for the principle that our legal system–and the judges and juries in it–is required to apply the law with impartiality. While many assume that this is merely meant to prevent favoritism of the rich and powerful, this is not true. It applies equally to prevent preferential treatment of the poor and seemingly downtrodden.
