YouTube's home/trending seems purposefully designed to make you lose faith in humanity

Change my mind
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I don’t know what that means. I listen to music and watch old movies. Seems mostly greed-based with eleventy-zillion commercials. I don't see any design other than $$$.
I do watch news stuff on there sometimes. But I also got game streams, music, how too, tech, religious vids (which always causes Christian ads no matter if it is an atheist video lol), ambient sounds for relaxation, and recuse animal vids which actually INCREASE faith in humanity.

@canusernamebemyusername I've the browser configured to purge all the cookies and local storage at the end of the session, so I fear what i get is the average of what my region or country watches.. 😶
@Elessar Oh no you poor thing! It's a strong algorithm. I get American junk even if I set my location and vpn to the UK:( This isn't planet America>:(

On a serious note, it used to spam me with loads of hard-right stuff because - you know - I clicked on a few videos to know what the other side thinks.

Now it's spamming me with 90's indie rock, war history, Owen Jones and Novarra Media. The algorithms know their stuff tbh.

@Burnley123 To make life a little harder to advertisers/trackers, my browser is configured to delete cookies and local data at the end of every session; I can see that suggestions no longer match my previous watching history the moment I restart the browser, what's concerning is what I'm presented anytime I start fresh 😶

it‘s purposely designed to show you more of that you have already watched

Elessar · 26-30, M
@RoxClymer No way I'm purposefully or even accidentally watching kids playing Fortnite
RoxClymer · 41-45, M
@Elessar....... and there is always something weird in the list,. But also Many demographic list will show that a white in his late 20s is Probably into video games. so YT will show you a popular vidEo game video.

Stephen Crowder sets a high bar.
FlowersNButterflies · 61-69, F
I use a subscription list.
DDonde · 31-35, M
People like to be outraged
Elessar · 26-30, M
@DDonde 4. (I forgot, this is local but I guess every country has its own) far-right parties propaganda with extremely cringe titles such as "An extraordinary Giorgia Meloni DESTROYS the opposition", published by the party channel itself lol

@Elessar I wanna see no. 3 so bad tho
Elessar · 26-30, M
@assemblingaknob I can't find it anymore

But on today's home there's this:

I must not be seeing enough of that, I guess since I mainly just watch music clips on YT it's been trained to only suggest more of the same to me, to the point that when I go there to specifically look for something I have to try not to look at the suggestions so I don't end up in a rabbit hole
Elessar · 26-30, M
@SW-User I do the same, "!yt <name of song>" on the browser bar lands me to the search result, but once in a while I make the mistake of clicking on the logo, end up seeing the home and feeling this urge to move somewhere remote enough in the Swiss Alps

@Elessar I stand corrected, there are a couple of crackhead vignettes it seems, this is from just now:

@SW-User But I need to know about the grey squirrels.
LordShadowfire · 46-50
I don't know about that. Here's the first thing YouTube recommended just now when I opened it:

Not necessarily what I would watch, but mildly funny.
empanadas · 31-35, M
Please don't join tik tok
Elessar · 26-30, M
@empanadas I've drawn the line long before that; like Instagram and Snapchat are already out, let alone TikTok lol
