Emanuel Kant said there are 3 reasons why people act morally: to be seen acting morally, out of fear of autority or because they are actual moral people . in this case its a case of no1, some people want to gain the "points" that come with being a moral person without actually making the effort or actually wanting to be moral. I've said those same words to people and if they forget to call me on arrival I text and ask if they came back home safely. but looking moral is very popular so people want to wear that on their shirt. that's like people who hear about someone's misfortunes and say , in text or in person, " I will pray for you", or " sending out prayers" . to me that sounds like they would love to use that occasion to be perceived as moral people but don't really want to make an effort.

@ravenwind43 well he was a christian after all, that might have corrupted his general perspective of humans but to observe that there are 3 reasons to act morally is just empirical observation and therefore doesn't matter who made the initial observation and whether he was an optimist or not, its just true. his statement does imply that some people do have actual moral autonomy even if most are just sheep.

Yes, Ive had friends do that back before smart phones. They'd say "call me when you get home so I know you're okay" but they didn't answer the phone
