Football. Heart Attack During a Game. Back in 1971.

There is a lot of discussion going on regarding Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who collapsed with a cardiac arrest during a game recently.

But this is not the first time this has happened in the NFL.

In 1971, Detroit Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes collapsed immediately after a 15 yard run against the Chicago Bears. By the time doctors got to him on the field, there was no pulse. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

He was 28.

Ten minutes after his body was taken off the field, the game resumed!

Was talking about football with somebody today, who noted: You can't hit players in the head because of the obvious trauma, you can't hit the knees (a delicate, tear-prone area), and that doesn't leave much left but the chest, where the player's heart is. Time to phase out football, billion-dollar stadiums and all. The game can't be fixed, unless watered down to the point where no one would want to watch it.
