Football. Heart Attack During a Game. Back in 1971.

There is a lot of discussion going on regarding Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who collapsed with a cardiac arrest during a game recently.

But this is not the first time this has happened in the NFL.

In 1971, Detroit Lions wide receiver Chuck Hughes collapsed immediately after a 15 yard run against the Chicago Bears. By the time doctors got to him on the field, there was no pulse. He was taken to a hospital where he was declared dead.

He was 28.

Ten minutes after his body was taken off the field, the game resumed!

BTW, if you've heard the claim that sudden deaths in sports are suddenly rampant after the Covid mRNA vaccine was introduced, here's a little data on the topic.

This article, "FIFA Sudden Death Registry (FIFA-SDR): a prospective, observational study of sudden death in worldwide football from 2014 to 2018"
says 617 FIFA players died of SCD within an hour of playing over a 5 year period = 123 per year (2014-2018).
https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/56/2/80

And this article says about 108 died in 2021 - a reduction in the FIFA death rate after vaccination!!
https://www.reuters.com/article/factcheck-coronavirus-sport/fact-check-list-of-108-fifa-soccer-players-is-not-proof-of-a-common-link-between-covid-19-vaccines-and-athlete-deaths-idUSL1N2T81NY

Note: I'm making no statistical claims about the drop in FIFA deaths during the 2021 vaccination year; merely pointing out how wrong the anti-vaxxers got it.

@ElwoodBlues And in 1971, there was no vax to blame this on.

@ElwoodBlues So sad we have to post these facts to battle online misinformation.

Yeah, much discussion and assumption. Of course it is news when a sports figure or any other relatively prominent idividual, collapses with cardiac arrest or any other serious health issue or injury...during a televised event.

It is really sad, that Damar Hamlin is still in critical condition.

Was talking about football with somebody today, who noted: You can't hit players in the head because of the obvious trauma, you can't hit the knees (a delicate, tear-prone area), and that doesn't leave much left but the chest, where the player's heart is. Time to phase out football, billion-dollar stadiums and all. The game can't be fixed, unless watered down to the point where no one would want to watch it.
im amazed at all the tv stations that all of a sudden came to the same conclusion within an hr..

as long as you dont suggest the jab that cant be named -- harry potter

@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout It was not the decision of the TV stations. They do not have the power to keep a game going. It was the decision of the NFL.
easy to ignore when its a european soccer player.
panic stations when 2 NFL stars have heart attacks in a week and 1x dies.

Times have changed

I remember that game!

When I went to get pizza after, the waitress asked me if I heard that Butkus killed someone on the field.
