He should stay for mow. If they would've won fire him then
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Fair assessment i'd say.

It is kinda nice having a team for a tournament and NOT having to HOPE for a 'Beckham free-kick opportunity' to be in with a chance of winning the game.

That said......do we HAVE any free-kick 'specialists' ?

I think you're right about the defensiveness. But then, i often think great teams often start with a solid back line and go from there.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Picklebobble2 Good point about the free-kick specialist but you are only gonna score one of those in ten games anyway.
ravenhill · M
i think so, he did a good job with the present england team, although i don't like them very much.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@ravenhill Why don't you like them?
adorbz · 26-30, F
Isn’t rooney a manager now 🤪😅 this is not my serious suggestion 👀 idk. And lampard. It’s weird to me that there are people who I remember as players who are managers now. I’m getting old.

But I agree with you clearly it’s working right now why change it 🤔 maybe it’s working too well 😅
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@adorbz Lampard got fired from Chelsea after not doing very well. Rooney has just started out at a team struggling in the Championship.

TBF Southgate himself had a limited CV prior to the England job. He floundered at his first job at Middlesborough but then did pretty well with England under 21s. I think we just sacked our U21 coach. But now he has experience as an England manager and his record is pretty successful. I say stick.

Fire his ass. Then we can hire him, so we can perhaps have our men's team qualify for any international competition.

If that's not an option, then he should stay. Losing the final does not mean he's a loser, especially when it hinged on PKs.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Northwest LOL. I do think the USMNT will definitely qualify for the next WC. I was very surprised you didn't make the last one and - on the long haul - the game is improving a lot in America. The MLS is an established pro league now and I rate you as having the 5th strongest player pool of any nation outside of Europe. I think that will keep improving too. Also world leaders of the women's game, which is not insignificant.

I don't think Southgate is in serious danger of being fired FWIW. He just has a few haters who don't see the big picture. There is a small chance he will want to quit but I think he will stay.

@Burnley123 I am skeptical of our men's team's chances. We have good individual players, but not when they get together as a team.

The women's team, I believe, will continue to dominate the sport. My daughter will be playing her second year on her college team. During her summer off-season, she's been "conditioning" at the gym, four hard core hours every day. They finished last season, with no wins, and an unpredictable schedule due to the Covid related cancelled games. This year, vaccinations are required to be a student, and not just the athletes.

@Northwest In men's football, the US is very much a strong second-level power. It's a nation that in a good tournament can get to the quarter-finals of a WC. It's a top twenty nation. However, there is a big gap between the second level and the top level of football nations. I don't know much about the current form of the team.

Women's football in America will continue to dominate. England is the only other country with a professional league and we have nothing like women's college football to develop elite players.

{burnley123 ] yes i think he should stay as england manager . he shows he has got ability to do the job . after the disappoint of the european championship he has a point to make. he has shown england can stand up to the biggest tests . i do not think they can win the next world cup but will be in the mix i think

Burnley
Yes he should stay on, as you pointed out the managers who could replace him I would not want , he is to defensive and I think he lacks a bit of tactical decisions when making subs and changing game , I totally agree with you about Phillips and rice , and we have nobody who is a world class midfielder who can make them passes and change a game , we have a lot of talent in forwards, also he needs to sort out the Kane situation and get him in box to score goals not on half way line like he was in whole of the final

The world cup is the next year. It would be crazy changing him now imo, especially considering he's led you to the Eurocup final. And for what, appeasing angry/disappointed fans?
He does seem to learn from his mistakes, he is driven and I cannot think of anyone who would be able to pick the team up after this.
World cup is only a year away
Lacemaker · 41-45, F
I don't know much about football but I read a lot about the Euros. Everyone has weaknesses but he owns up to them. He has his feet on the ground and genuinely cares about his younger players, who definitely needed support after Sunday's defeat. He's a good guy.
Lacemaker · 41-45, F
@Burnley123 I think it would be sheer madness to bring in a new manager before the World Cup too. The team needs someone who's established and knows them. They need to look at the Euro Cup as a run-up to this. I think they'll be in the running but won't necessarily win the WC.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@Lacemaker I agree completely. Given the lack of alternatives, I actually want Southgate to continue after the WC too. He is only fifty, which is still quite young and he might want to get back into club management at some point.

We won't necessarily win the WC but no team can claim that they can. Italy is quite an old team and even 18 months can make a difference in this game. They will also have a bit less motivation because they have just won a trophy. I could be wrong, but I don't think they will be quite as good in the WC.

France always has great players and will be motivated after the way they got knocked out. Germany will probably improve under their new coach and they are pretty good anyway. Brazil will be contenders too. Lots of other teams will think they have an outside chance. The football world has tough competition in the top bracket but I think we will be contenders for the next five years at least.

@Lacemaker 👏👏👍❤️

Yes I think he should stay on. He's done great things with the England team and he's a great bloke who really supports his boys 👍👏
