How can anyone celebrate the USA World Cup win over Iran knowing what will happen to Iran's players? ~

They and, possibly, their families will be arrested and tortured for their failure to defeat the American enemy.

To me, any victory in a frivolous sports event is hollow and lame compared to that. As an American, I would rather have seen Iran win if it would have prevented such mistreatment and suffering.

The Iran players are in trouble for not singing the national anthem in the first game. Beating America would have indeed given them a level of protection (nobody wants to be seen locking up national heroes( but it was not to be.

I don't think you can blame the US players or fans for wanting to win and I don't think that you are. These guys work their whole professional lives to play in the World Cup. It's the Iran regime at fault here.

But yeah, it does make the winning feeling bitter-sweat. I'm an England fan and it's almost the same dynamic.

If the threats were real then they should have been disqualified to begin with. A country with the human rights history such as the Iranian regime should never be allowed to participate in international events.

It’s ridiculous. Iran is a 14 th century throwback. The world should remove their government and destroy them. Damn you get stoned if you have a hair hanging out of your burka
A few decades ago, a Columbian soccer player had an own goal against the US in a World Cup Match. That year Columbia was a favored to win the Cup and a heavy to beat the US. They lost the game and were eliminated.

Not long after when the player returned to Columbia, he was murdered by gangsters that lost a lot of money on the betting.

@BlueSkyKing Yeah, Escobar after the 94 World Cup. Tragedy.
Because ignoring it and giving them the fake win will make it all better? It makes more sense to let the rest of the world see what takes place, that won't happen if everyone just turns a blind eye and gives them everything to avoid confrontation.

@UnderLockDown Who said anything about a fake win?
Mooed78 · F
That’s awful
In that case, just let them win the whole tournament. Damn, its just soccer. Crown em champs.
RedBaron · M
@YourMomsSecretCrush True enough. Any sporting event is frivolous compared to human rights.
@RedBaron Imagine if Iran played North Korea. Damn sure suck to be the loser of that one.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
Iraq did that under Saddam. I haven't heard of Iran doing it.
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@hunkalove Oh there is a lot of shit going down in Iran. The government troops are shooting protesters and the team has spoken out against it.
DogMan · 61-69, M
Are we still sending pallets of cash to Iran? Maybe we could hold off on a couple
payments to them. THAT will teach them.
revenant · F
What is your source on that ?
Burnley123 · 41-45, M
@revenant You can get this from multiple sources.

@revenant Google is your friend and can save you from making ignorant comments.
I have been following the Iran football team story quite closely.

The Iranian people in the streets demonstrating against the regime are divided on the national team, so it has been reported, and there was this huge belief that if they had beaten the US and moves on to the knockout phase the victory would have been appropriated by the regime and the players – out of fear or threats for many among them – dutifully falling into line.

Their statement was powerful but you mustn't take anything away from the US who played brilliantly and earned their place in the final 16.
RedBaron · M
@InOtterWords I don't take anything away from the US. I just think it would better had they lost if it would have prevented this.
@RedBaron it would not have prevented anything though
RedBaron · M
@InOtterWords Sadly, I think you are correct.
