I'd be fine with just getting rid of the reclining option.

@SooperSarah Me too

Kick the reclined seat
Stillwaiting · M
@Asmae Lol .. I'm 6'4" .. not 3'4". Kinda physically impossible. ;-)
Asmae · 31-35, F
Punch it then @Stillwaiting
Stillwaiting · M
@Asmae Polite requests, tapping, bouncing my leg, drum solos ... I've tried about everything to get the message across ;-)
Lugubri0 · 56-60, M
I'm 6'6. I always try to book the emergency exit, though it's not so attractive an option now I pay for flights. I have been on flights where the person in front has tried to recline and can't because my knees are stopping them.
Stillwaiting · M
@Lugubri0 Same .. and have also had a couple people literally slam their seatback backward after meeting the resistance initially.
Neoerectus · M
I am 6'-2" and need to recline since much of my height is in my torso. The seats are painful in not supporting my lumbar curve. Reclining helps. These days, most seats I have expefienced only recline one or two inches, anyway.
I also shouldlnote that most seats lack extensions to properly upport my head in turbulence. Forget tucking for a crash...not enough room.
Airlines need to be better regulated to improve safety, comfort, and to rein in those ridiculous charges...
"Sir? Do you wish oxygen for this flight? That will be an additional $75 each way..." is coming, me suspects.

There’s that issue and another would be how to request not to be seated next to someone who needs 1.75 seat space on a plane,
especially when you’re not pocket-size yourself.
If the airlines can find an equitable way to make everyone comfortable, I’d be happy to know.
Removing the reclining option might be fair, but not if you think of long haul flights of 16hrs+.

@BeefySenpie
You’re suggesting that the reclining feature will be limited to those who can afford to fly biz or first class.
Similar to differences in food choices between economy and biz/first class seats.

@CookieCrumbs I am yes
Stillwaiting · M
@CookieCrumbs Lol. Well. I'm no 6'4" bean pole. I fill a door frame like I fill my seat, while still fitting within normal sizes of both. I don't infringe on others .. just trying to find a way to have the same courtesy from them. ;-)
deadgerbil · 22-25, M
Give extra spacing to all rows, do not increase fares accordingly. Nip corporate greed in the ass
Stillwaiting · M
@deadgerbil Would be nice, but not gonna happen.
JovialMoose · 46-50, M
Wouldn't it make most sense to put the people on the plane from back to front in height descending order?

Though I agree with your sentiment completely as my legs are in the same position, this will never change.
You paid for a ticket. Nobody said anything about any supposed rights. You have the privilege of maybe arriving to the place you got a ticket to. Even then they still don’t care about you or your rights.

Stillwaiting · M
@SW-User Kinda my point there .. as same applies to the person laying down in my lap and claiming its their right. I've set a couple rude ones upright after explaining that in response.

SW-User
@Stillwaiting that’s insane. My pet peeve is when people take their shoes off. I’d honestly rather be packed in a suitcase through checked baggage
Stillwaiting · M
@SW-User Lol. Yeah that's no good either.
OldGrandDad · M
I am at about the same height and have the same issue. I have to recline my seat too and the other passengers have that right as well. Row spacing has diminished over the years. Airlines are too money hungry to care about service. The best option for me I have found is to pay additional for comfort plus class seating.
Stillwaiting · M
@OldGrandDad Works for personal travel .. but only when available. My company won't pay increase for business travel unless for international or flights longer than 5 hrs.
iamBen · 46-50, M
I'm tall too and travel fairly often. In general, I have found exit row seats solve the issue. I pay a fee for that privilege. Which I accept as reasonable. So, for me at least, I think the issue has been resolved if one plans well enough in advance to book seats as needed.
Stillwaiting · M
@iamBen One can't always choose timing on one's business travel and as stated elsewhere in the thread, the company won't pay upgrades. Business travel is the majority of my air travel and often enough I can't afford /shouldnt have to pay all the upgrade fees. Looking for a better solution than this.
Vengabus · 31-35
The problem is that when it’s a long haul flight, you need to sleep. If all I can do is recline the seat slightly that’s what I’m going to do. If the people behind me also then recline, it should be fine.
Stillwaiting · M
@Vengabus How would me reclining supposedly change the height of my legs when the seat in front reclines ? Majority of the time .. I can't extend my feet into the foot well because my work bag has to be put there.
Vengabus · 31-35
@Stillwaiting i confess to never actually having the luxury to fly these days. My work won’t even give me a chair to sit down or let me go to the toilet. They’re not likely to pay to fly me around the world. And it’s been a long time since I’ve been on holiday, nearly 20 years I think. I can’t really remember what it’s like.

Suggest that the Mediterranean female basis for seat space is not appropriate unless the flight is within that area and composed only of women.
Disgustedman · 61-69, M
Honestly as long as I'm not inconvenienced I don't give a crap about the other passengers.
DiegoWolfe · 36-40
honestly the recline crap is the only HUGE problem in airplanes today...
Never thought about it.. glad I'm 5'10-11 😅
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
Increase fares and reduce seating.
SethGreene531 · M
Remove the recline feature altogether.
Prioritze getting airliners off fossil fuels before any other priority, period. Nothing else matters as long as air travel is destroying the atmosphere.
Then we can re-examine comfort, pricing, route length, etc., perhaps at the same time airliners naturally change in size and shape (more of a lifting body / flying wing design). Also bring back ekranoplans and make them big enough to haul 1k or more passengers with ample spacing and only one seating class. Maybe ekranoplans should replace airliners altogether. Private jets should've been banned yesterday. All domestic overland routes should be handled by electric high speel rail (this is a solved problem in places like France and Japan), not polluting jets.

@BlueGreenGrey Yeah .. so nothing realistically likely to happen for about a hundred years
@Stillwaiting in the early 1960s going to the moon was not realistic
Everything always boils down to how much commitment a country makes to any given goal (and how much it ignores its serial malcontent faction that revels in treading water or yearning for the past)

@BlueGreenGrey We sent up what .. 12 people from this planet .. that set foot on the moon .. total .. and none since 1972. Lot narrower challenge and the space station is our biggest advance since. A pitance compared to converting the infrastructure and mode of travel for 8+ billion people globally. More unrealistic solutions .. like a mandate for electric only cars by 2030 or 2035 with no plan to build a sufficient grid to charge them. Or ignoring that the mining required for the metals for the batteries is terrible for the environment. Half baked ideas with big claims tend to create as many problems as they solve.

Imagine flying 12 or 14 hours like when I do to Asia for business trips 💀
I only survive because I know Saudia airlines hardly ever fully packs their flights..so I'm usually with an empty seat next or row most of the time. But yeah that shit is annoying. For 2 to 4 hours national flights, I fly first or business class. It's not as crazy expensive as an international flight

@empanadas Like said above .. not an option for me for business travel as company wont pay the upgrade. That's by far the majority of my domestic air travel.
