That stops it from being true kindness. I like the concept of a mitzvah, where you perform a kind act in secret, with no expectation of credit or acknowledgment. But someone with the ego of your friend would probably get no personal satisfaction from that.

Be humble and Kind, your friend forgot the first which taints the second

His is the worst type of vanity.

Stay away from him

I'm suspicious of anyone who brags about anything.

Maybe check out the different types of narcissist on a YouTube vlog by Dr Ramani Durvasula. She's a lifelong specialist, and offers excellent tips.

Of course, he might just be an ordinary guy who hopes to win acceptance, approval and love.
Does he generally expect others to give him something for his kindness?
Rainandforest · 22-25, F
@LookingForSomethingNew no. Just to increase his popularity i guess
@Rainandforest Woulda been weird both ways, but somehow this is still weirder lol.

There's the "humble brag", and then there is "virtue signaling" . Of the two, I think virtue signaling is worse. It's like you are doing good, but ONLY so you can earn a Merit Badge.

Some people seem to relish bragging, I would agree the quiet people who would like to be confidential are the true kind people.

It's like advertising your generosity if you make a donation to a good cause.

Next he'll be telling you how humble he is.

I am a firm believer that if you help people because it felt good You're a selfish person. if you help people because its the right thing to do, that to me is true kindness. 🧙‍♂️
Matt85 · 36-40, M
Rather that than doing nothing but I get it.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
That usually means one of two things

1) His kindness is a means to manipulate people and its a red flag.

2) He suffers from low self-esteem and requires the validation of others to feel better about himself.

The second is not as malign, but it does make the altruism hollow and can be difficult to be around.
Rainandforest · 22-25, F
@ViciDraco in other words : stay away from them

I don't brag about my actions. If I do it it means I wanted to and so be it.
Nah.. if i help someone i keep it to myself.. it's should never be about me .. I think it's a personal thing , bragging just takes away the purity of the act.
Charity, character and humility are intertwined..
That's just my opinion though.
Rainandforest · 22-25, F
@Onestarlitnight but that's the right attitude
@Rainandforest
