How accurate is google translate?

ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
It's become really very good for many purposes in some languages, for example French/English. The AI technology involved is advanced to the point of being scary (if you ask me). I often use it to double-check what I want to say in French, which is a language I know quite well.

On the other hand, even with those languages, you can't rely on it; for example, it doesn't magically know whether a person you are writing to should be addressed as "tu" (familiar form of "you") or "vous" (more formal form).

It also is not great for very brief texts without context, or, on the other hand, for passages from serious literature.

It also will not help much if you are translating into your own language from somebody else's slangy "textspeak" with lots of non-standard spellings.

All that is for a language it "knows" well. For many other languages, I guess because the AI doesn't have as much experience or material to work with, it can still be useful but also makes bad mistakes, especially with idioms.

So, google translate is one of the tools available, and a pretty great one all things considered, but it won't solve all our translation needs.

(Also, don't use it for language homework -- that would be cheating, unless you have the teacher's explicit permission!)

@ServantOfTheGoddess thank you. Not sure why you'd assume I have homework given my age. But thanks

@iamnikki Lots of graduate students are your age. But I wasn't assuming it, so much as adding a caution for any students who might be reading the thread.
In many languages it is good in a pinch if you need to be understood. Although even with pretty common languages it breaks very easily.

For example:

Translate from English to French and no problems.

Translate from French to English, same thing.

Translate from English to French and back again and you get incomprehensible word salad.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow OMG. The LAST thing I am is passive-aggressive. Once again, that is highly insulting to me.

I'm trying to give you some guidance with my insight and you have such a chip on your shoulder you won't see it. Personally (I'm not saying professionally), I think it's what we call "overcompensating" for an area where you don't feel particularly good about yourself. I can go into more details, but I know you tend to get upset when I present you with sound advice in that manner. And, I am working to be more empathetic.
@MarkPaul And more denial and gaslighting, oh and of course your prerequisite persecution complex.
Depends on the language.

For years I have tested such things by doing a reverse translation. Mismatches are a sign that something is amiss...rather than a hit...! 😉😆
it's better to use online conjugators and form your own sentences along with help from the translator, if you can speak the language. translate works for lots of things, but it's good to use a dictionary, online conjugator charts, and read examples of sentences with word use because the translator can make some odd translations. for certain things there aren't exact translations between languages and certain things can sound funny without knowing the language.

It really depends on the language - it seems to think that Cantonese is Finnish on occasion 😂😂
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
It varies by language, but generally reliable.

It's helpful if you know the language and grammar, but not so great if you don't.
