Was the breaking up of the Christian church into denominations when personality began mattering more than service to God?

We heard about the American churches based on a personality, like Jim Bakker, and how suddenly irregularities occured with monies given by eager adherents......

It was the moment when people began following their own consciences and thinking more critically about their existence, rather than passively accepting what the Church in Rome told them.

@BarboraK Not the only one, but the desire for a more direct and personal relationship with Jesus, without the intervention of priests, was definitely an important factor.

@BarboraK True, but they do not claim the same sacred status as Catholic priests. In some non-conformist churches, the leaders are directly elected from the congregations.
