Uvalde TX Elementary School. This is tragic. And what makes this so sad is that we as a society are becoming numb. Comfortably numb. There was yet another one of these mass shootings in the US here.
An 18 year old with a gun. Same ole story same ole song. When is this crap gonna end ?
What can we do to stop this ? Answers please. Do you know. 🤔

@ElwoodBlues They look really hard to find. They might have to go all the way to the library. And get a {horror} library card.

It's that slippery slope you gun nuts are always whining about, LOL!!! Face it, if a government treated a class of guns that way, you would call it BANNED! Yeah, dude, those books are BANNED. That's cancellation BIGLY!!

@BizSuitStacy I give up with you! Your mind is concrete and you see only things that you want to see. You do know that the funding for any CDC research on gin use disappeared many years ago, and that trying to get federal funding for research on gun violence, is all but impossible. I am a scientist, I read scientific journals, not right wing rebuttals of such. Have a great life!
@samueltyler2 Ask yourself why the CDC's report on DGUs disappeared? Fortunately, everything posted to the internet is forever. Plus, there are at least a dozen other studies that came to the same conclusion. Ohhh...you're a scientist? You read scientific jounals?
So. I have a BS in biology. Scientists are human and corruptible. Just look to your leader, Dr. Fraudci. Spare us your superiority complex. You're a leftist hack who thinks they know better. The classic psychological flaw of every leftist. BTW...I've researched gun violence for more than a decade. I've read several books, dozens of articles and even contributed research for some. I've studied the FBI's crime database, the relative strength of the gun laws in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, and gun ownership by state. There is no correlation between gun violence and gun laws, nor is there any correlation between gun violence and the relative number of guns owned per capita. The 3-90 rule applies. 90% of the gun violence occurs in America's inner cities...run by democrats. 90% of firearm homicides are committed by people with at least one felony on their record. The average is four. BTW...it's illegal for felons to be in possession of a firearm...those gun laws at work. 90% of firearm homicides are committed with handguns. Rifles and shotguns account for 5% each. Firearms the left refers to as "assault weapons" such as the AR-15 that you villify accounts for less than 1% of all firearm homicides. You are statistically far more likely to be beaten to death in a fight with hands and feet than you are from an AR-15. That's the science skippy.

Imo the American government can stop this but for some weird reason they aren't even trying. In my country Egypt shootings and more used to happen in Churches a lot specially in the late 90s. Now there's barricades and roadblocks in front of Churches and there's been only one attack in the last decade.

Treat schools like airports, metro stations and malls put metal detectors and infrared bag checkers. There's a lot of solutions. The US government already offers a lot of luxuries for you guys like disabled friendly parks I think they are called all abilities parks. A youtuber raised $100k for one in Utah.

If one were to raise money to bring infrared detectors to schools it'll be done within a day. You need to step in and try to fix this because your government whether democrats or republicans are just being useless and just judging other nations. They forgot about their own people. You guys deserve better than this. These kids can be saved.
@basilfawlty89 It's not like police in Egypt can't be brutal. There's always the good guys and the bad guys. A lot of police all over the world are nice people.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@Zonuss Well then you're all fucked
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
What do you want to do?

1. Ban Military Assault Weapons. Problem here is that Military Assault Weapons have been illegal to own since the 1930s after Legislation was enacted into Law after the Gangsters used them quite frequently on each other and the Police during the 1920's. Unless you have a Federal Firearms License or also known as an FFL. There are different types of FFLs.
Type 1 FFL: Dealer of Firearms / Gunsmithing (firearms repair)
Type 2 FFL: Pawnbroker
Type 3 FFL: Collector of Curios and Relics
Type 6 FFL: Manufacturer of Ammunition for Firearms
Type 7 FFL: Manufacturer of Firearms and Ammunition
Type 8 FFL: Importer of Firearms/Ammunition
Type 9 FFL: Dealer of Destructive Devices
Type 10 FFL: Manufacturer of Destructive Devices, Ammunition for Destructive Devices, or Armor Piercing Ammunition
Type 11 FFL: Importer of Destructive Devices, Ammunition for Destructive Devices, or Armor Piercing Ammunition

2. Universal Background Checks. We already have them. They were enacted into Law back in the 1990s during Clinton's Presidency along with an 'Assault' Weapon ban of 15 years. It's an FBI Background Check which anyone who wants to buy any gun from a Dealer who then files it with the FBI and it takes 3 days to clear. Now there is nothing in the wording that says that Individual Courts or Mental Health Institutions are required by Law to report anything to the FBI like Domestic Abuse or Mental Health Treatment. If required, when does it get reported. When it's first filed or after a judgement has been made. They can also be used for nefarious reasons.

3. Ban Military Style Assault Weapons. Do we just ban the ones that look like the ones the Military uses today or do we ban all military look-a-likes? Now if it's ALL Military look-a-likes, then understand this One Important Fact: every gun made from when the Chinese invented them during the 900s AD has been used as a Military Firearm. This is where the Gun Ban Crowd runs afoul of the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution.

4. Red Flag Laws. What are they and who do they apply to? Every single person alive today within the borders of USA fall under these types of Laws. Can they be used for nefarious reasons? YES THEY CAN. Because anyone who has had an argument or disagreement with anyone else can have their firearms confiscated and permanently kept from ever buying / owning one again. This also applies to people who dislike others in their midst in which all they have to say is I 'feel' threatened and whatever LEO can swoop in without a warrant and seize the firearms of anyone permanently. People can also make up things and anyone will lose their firearms.

5. Total Elimination of the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution. This must first be authored, debated on, and passed by a 2/3s majority in the US House of Representatives, it then goes to the US Senate where it must be debated on and passed by 2/3s of the majority, then it goes to the President of the USA who decides to sign it or veto it, and then if signed, it goes to each Individual State to be voted on by the Residents of that State, and once it has been voted and passed by a 2/3s Majority of the US Population, the 2nd Amendment can be removed from the US Constitution.
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
@samueltyler2 it is all true. But people like you only see one way and that is a total ban. Which means it'll be easier to any criminal to commit a crime.
dakotaviper · 56-60, M
@Slade my bad. I thought it was 2/3rds.
Slade · 56-60, M
@dakotaviper it's deliberately set up to be a huge process to change it. To prevent temporary hysteria or demagoguery to result in permanent change
SW-User
The problem and the solution lies with society and how it deals with mentally ill people. Instead of arguing for gun laws to be amended and/or for schools to start searching anyone who enters, people should address why these events are happening.
Slade · 56-60, M
@Handfull1 Last I checked my guns have never shot themselves.

You fail - again
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@Diotrephes 44% of Americans believe China is the world's leading economic power, therefore they are crazy? It really doesn't seem like a story by a medical professional.

As far as 44% being affected by mental illness in their life time, when depression and anxiety are included in the list of mental disorders, it should be 100%. I don't think anyone survives a life without being depressed over the loss of a loved one or about failing at something important. Anxiety over a job change or a child or how to pay the bills. Both article are Mickey Mouse BS.
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@Slade The first "assault rifle" was the Sturmgewehr 44. As German war production was failing the gun manufacturers showed Hitler a medium cartridge weapon capable of full auto fire. The cartridge it was chambered for was much smaller than the standard 8mm or 7mm service ammunition, but Hitler thought the name, "Assault Rifle" would work well in propaganda.

"Between 1982 and May 2022, 68 out of the 128 mass shootings in the United States were carried out by white shooters. Seriously…what do you expect.

We promote it in video games, song lyrics, movies, books etc.

And then expect people to NOT think its ok?

Yeah. Its the guns fault. *eyes roll*
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
@romper69 Maybe we just don’t hear about it.
romper69 · 51-55, M
@LunarOrbit No...you would hear about it because it would be so uncommon...it would be news. Maybe not in the US where it seems such things happen regularly, but outside it would be.

There are no school shootings in Europe to nearly the extent there is in the US...if at all. It is exposed to the same video games, song lyrics, movies, books etc as the USA. The difference...stricter gun controls or no guns.

So why are shootings in the USA more common?

It's either the easier access to firearms in the USA, or if certain media is responsible as you say, Americans are less mentally capable of differentiating between fact and fiction, are easier to influence through entertainment media, and are unable to to judge what is morally, and criminally right or wrong. Which is it?
LunarOrbit · 56-60, M
@romper69 Its a bit of everything. An 18 yr old shouldn’t have had the weapons he acquired. Yes, there needs to be better checks and balances as to who can and cannot have firearms. And there needs to be more secure facilities for our loved ones.
ScarletWitch · 26-30, F
The man was a terrorist. May those children rest in peace in God's Arms. Jesus. An elementary school. He killed babies. Those poor souls. And he's dead so their are no consequences except hell. Burning forever.
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@ScarletWitch Was the shooter even a citizen?
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@Diotrephes That doesn't matter. This isn't the first or last time this has happened.🙄
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@ScarletWitch It is unfortunate that such things happen to children who will never get the opportunity to live because some nut killed them just for the hell of it. So far all of my extended family has been spared such a tragedy but that might not always be the case.

I wonder how many parents have basic life insurance policies on their kids in case such a thing was to happen to them? If you get such a policy on a new-born it is dirt cheap and it can be increased periodically for just a couple of bucks each time. It save having to beg for money to bury them if the worst were to ever happen. Of course no amount of money could ever take the place of a sweet child but it's something that all parents should think about and take care of while they can.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
Yes get guns off the street and out of public ownership .
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@ArishMell If guns werent readily available you wouldnt have half the shootings the US has . The most recent was an 18 year old who a couple of days before , was able to walk in a shop buy a submachine gun or semi automatic and another rifle and no one questioned it . Where in a civilised world is that ok . Sorry ban the sale of guns unless someone can prove they have an absolute neccessity to own one . No one at 18 maybe not even 21 should be allowed to own a gun without proof that there is good reason for it and is accompanied by a licence holding adult to vouch for them .
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Rhode57 Yes, it so awful but also so puzzling, when we see it from afar so are not embroiled in their domestic political and social divisions.

Why for example would so many private citizens even want, let alone need, a submachine gun or large-magazine automatic rifle, that it's worth the shops stocking them openly? In some States anyway, maybe not all. I don't think even trophy-hunters or deer-stalkers shooting big animals use such guns.

One American, PM correspondent on here once said that shootings are so common in the USA that most rarely go un-reported except locally. Including in his own town - I don't know where he lives.

That incomprehension works both ways of course. It's pretty clear that a few Americans are so baffled by societies who do not wish to be full of private arms and have close gun laws, that they think those countries "wimps" or "tyrannies".
Ozuye502 · 36-40, M
@Rhode57 somewhere between 1 and 3 million defensive use of a firearm yearly in the US buddy! Tell me how owning a gun is a bad thing?
Viper · M
This isn't going to end any time soon... (not in America).

Honestly, I'm numb to it now... which is sad but honest.

The level of respect and responsibility for others is gone in America... and I don't think you can gain that back, as it's a culture thing.

I do think they could do something with mental illness and weapons, but weapons people don't want limits and the mental illness professionals don't want to be in a position where they have to be the bad guys making the decision, as they want to be the good guys you can always come to, no matter what.

And to the weapons people point, other countries have started giving a couple of inches and then went more extremes and took away the weapons, so they don't want to give an inch...

But as my parents (whom grew up in the country), students would often bring guns to school during hunting season to go hunting after school. But now, we can't trust others to be respectful other others rights and lives.
Ozuye502 · 36-40, M
Until we make schools a hardened target this will continue. Now am I talking about adding law enforcement officers yes but each school should have a rapid response force on school grounds armed to deal with with any threat. Armed school staff like administrators and custodians that choose to be armed understand tactics and have the discipline to carry. Make an attempt to attack a school a certain death sentence with overwhelming force. Hell I got a job offer for ever veteran who can clear a background and mental health check. Make schools a hardened target.

Now those who say banning firearms is the only option there’s plenty of documented cases of mass stabbings in Europe and Asia. What are we going to ban knives as well? And how about the roughly 100,000 cases of defensive uses of a firearm that happen yearly? Most of which result in a round never being discharged. This country doesn’t have a gun problem it’s a mental health problem. If the firearm(s) used in all these situations could talk I would put money on them saying they would rather be in the hands of a collector rather than some nut case.

@Ozuye502 Agreed.
Ravens80 · 46-50, F
@Ozuye502 well said. Funny how these things have only happened in the last 20 years or less. When I was in high school the guys brought guns in their vehicles during hunting season and no one ever got shot. It’s a people problem and has been driven by shitty parenting, leftist beliefs and teaching in school along with a society that seems to think there are no consequences for anything anymore.
It is very sad. 😔 And senseless loss of human lives. I mourn for the parents who lost their kids.
……….

Two issues here:
1. Easy access to guns
2. And easy access of those not mentally stable to be responsible for its ownership
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@ArishMell America's culture is raised and taught to be violent. Guns are everywhere in the US. You can get them at anytime from anyone who is willing to sell. It is human nature to kill. It may not be right, but this narrative has stood the test of time. Just look at whats going on with Russia and Ukraine. Now prove me wrong. 🤔
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Zonuss Oh,, yes violence has stalked humanity for thousands of years.

(Intriguingly, archaeologists have found no sign of battles in traces left by much earlier people, but perhaps because there were far fewer around and virtually no need to compete for resources and room. It's as if fighting grew with "civilisation".)

Nowadays though, it's how society deals with it that counts, such as the explanation you give of American culture. Yet many other countries, other than in wars, have become less violent and less tolerant of violence, generally and very gradually, over the years. That doesn't mean they have no violent crime, but that the idea of violence as a stock answer to anything has become anathema to far more people.

A peculiar aspect of buying weapons in some States was told me by a friend. The cashier in a
small shop readily sold him rifle rounds to replace those he'd been invited to expend on a local's private range, but refused to sell him beer. She could not understand how his driving-licence number holds his slightly-disguised date of birth, so he could not prove his alcohol-buying age. And he was a visitor to the USA - not an American visiting from another American State, but a foreigner!
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@ArishMell Wars existed since the Creation. Read about King Ogs empire. Alexander the Great. King David's army. And so on and so on.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
You know the US is going to shit when the countries own president is over ruled over gun laws . What the hell is the point of having heads of state that are all but useless . Not only Biden but several presidents before him as well . To be honest if I was him its time to either stand up and stand as a leader should and make the laws and bugger what the gun lobby want or walk out and say Fuck the lot of you and leave the country and let the idiots go gun happy and once they have killed each other we can resettle the US with civilised humans without the savage mentality .

i live in a swing state that usually swings red. there is online schooling available through the public school system, and when a large percentage of parents signed their children up for it during the pandemic, the R governor tried to have it banned along with wearing masks in school. it's like they dgaf about children at all.

if i had a kid in school here, i'd have them enrolled in the public home-school system because of the potential for gun violence on campus. it's happened here already.

I know that area vaguely. I pass thru about an hour or so from Uvalde all of the time when heading to my property.
I've always found border/West Texas to be safe and full of small primarily Latin communities, cowboys, hardworkers, slow living. Never thought that this would happen in a place like that but I'm not totally surprised either. Nothing shocks me anymore.
USA has a serious problem but I can't see any solution.
1. It's our constitutional right to bear arms. We can't chip away at any constutional right or our entire nation will fall because then every right is fair game.
2. In the USA civilians currently own almost 50% of all civilian owned guns in the whole world.
No amount of laws or legislation will ever change this.
3. Millions of Americans will see the streets run red with blood before they relinquish any firearm to the government because limiting civilian firearm use is seen as limiting personal freedom and the right to defend oneself against tyranny.
4. Background checks, gunshow laws and the like will have no affect on these types of shootingsin my opinion.
I don't know what the answer is. We live in a Godless world full of people who lack empathy for others, who are sick with sin, depression, evil hearts, confusion, loneliness and murderous ideation.
I don't see any law fixing the unique problem that we have here in the US.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@REMsleep Maybe US society is becoming a tyranny, but not by its government.
@PrettyFlamingos I think that it makes it obvious that there is gun violence in the US and that it needs to be addressed in a rational, realistic, and real-life way. (I am an optimist that worries a lot)
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@PrettyFlamingos They do manage - I live in one - but they still have problems with violence; some terrorist but most not. A lot of it, in English cities at least, is between teenage drug-dealers.

What they don't have, even where many people still go out shooting clay-pigeons or wild animals, are:

- A casual fixation on guns designed for only one purpose - killing - as some sort of "right", extending to allowing almost anyone to own private arsenals including powerful battlefield weapons. (I know gun controls do vary from state-to state across the US, as does the popularity of gun ownership; and very many American households own no guns at all.)

- An idea that if a constitution and statutes have been amended to suit the needs of the time, it must never be amended again; even when those needs change or disappear leaving the amendment to develop more problems than it was intended to prevent.

Switzerland had a sort of echo of that early-US law about every man bearing arms, but bound up with conscription, and now scrapped.

Despite all the wallowing in rancorous party-politics, this is very much a social and cultural matter, and only its own society and culture can change it.
iamelijah · 26-30, M
I would say ban guns because guns will abused by people like this incident.

@samueltyler2 I doubt it.

Too many sick in the mind these days. Violence seems to be the answer.
Sharky86 · 36-40, M
guns are cool! And freedom!
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@Sharky86 Not if used improperly.
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
Just get all the people who want to shoot people and put then altogether on an island and let them shoot it out amongst themselves, knifes thowing acid all allowed. Last man standing gets shot to but dont tell them that lol
Diotrephes · 70-79, M
@Justenjoyit How can you have serious gun control laws when the Slave Patrol lovers make excuses for the thugs when they murder people and get away with it? Clean up the cops first and then you can start talking about gun control measures. They are far more dangerous than the routine mass shooter.
Justenjoyit · 56-60, M
@Diotrephes I think you will tend to find if you take away guns from the dangerous people rhe police will become more relaxed like they are here in Europe, I actually feel sorry for the US police because for some its a life or death circumstance with some of the dangerous people they have to deal with, I would probably
Shoot first too just to be on the safe side.

@Justenjoyit All cops should have to undergo annual periodic psycho exams. The relevant jurisdiction should be liable for a flat rate of $20,000,000 for everyone murdered by a cop unless the victim is an active shooter. So, if five cops participate in the murder the price would be $100,000,000. No appeal and payable to the victim's immediate survivors within 30 days of the incident.

I believe it's way kids are brought up as nothing but violence. Greed and hate on the news every day. And there minds only know hate
Slade · 56-60, M
@candycane and the unstable ones were stuck at home for 2 years to absorb God knows on the 'net. No social interaction at all
candycane · 31-35, F
@Slade yes and many thought the world was dying
Slade · 56-60, M
@candycane he basically advertised it on social media but was ignored. All the eyes were watching for anything being revealed about sacred cows instead

@CopperCicada I believe pride keeps people divided especially in politics.
