It's an issue of visual symmetry that people are making reference to when they see you wearing what you described.
A v-necked T-shirt was intended by the designer to be worn with an open-collared button-down shirt. With the top collar button of the shirt left un-buttoned, the open collar forms a V-pattern. The v-necked T-shirt worn underneath was designed to match that V-pattern of the outer shirt to the point where the v-necked T-shirt would never actually be visible.
But when you wear a crew neck T-shirt with v-necked sweater, you are subliminally conveying an ultra-conservative demeanor in your deportment by the statement the crew neck is making against the otherwise visually-liberal, v-necked sweater.
Police for example, only wear a crew neck white T-shirt under their open-collared uniform shirt, no matter what color that uniform shirt is.. black, blue, white. It is the statement of the crew necked collar of the underlying T-shirt that screams conformity and conservatism in a police uniform. [/c]
