How many of u on SW remember when there was no internet ?

Well it wasnt allowed to the general public that is. I understand that NASA had it back in the 70s and communicating like we are today back then. But anyway, how many of you people here remember when we did not have the internet or email. During the 80's and 90's there was no social online media. There was no Facebook. There was no Instagram crap. And no Yahoo or Gmail.
How many of you remember. 🙂

I used 80 column cards in college for my Cobol class. That was a long time ago.

Pre-internet the first big hospital I worked at used a rotary dial phone to submit electronic bills to the state. You dialed the number and when the computer answered the handset was put in a cradle so the two computers could "talk". I wrote the code for it.

@tzzzzr I remember cards (Fortran) and paper tape we used to load the program onto Eprom via paper tape

@SW-User My first job was night operator on an IBM System 36. The only way to get data out of it was the printer or a single slot 8" diskette. It took 28 diskettes to back it up which I did every night.
In 1994 I was one of the few people in our company to be granted internet access to help create images for our website. I felt like a god with so much (at the time) at my fingertips. I think I started surfing for porn within 10 minutes 🤣

What Nasa had wasn't the Internet we now have. That's all due to the structure and protocols Tim Berners-Lee came up with whilst at Cern in the 80s.

I remember using DECTalk a chat program in the early 80s whilst I worked in banking. I'd use it to talk to the office while in site. That was the start for me. Then opera and netscape navigator.

Most of my life was pre-internet. My first internet connection was with a Webtv box.

@cherokeepatti Interesting. I remember Webtv.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Zonuss It was fun, could watch tv up in the corner of the tv while surfing the net, switch back and forth, etc.

I remember IMing in the late 90s. And having to make a Yahoo account I think Jr year computer lab. The mid to late 90s was the time PCs were coming more common in households.

Of course I remember days of Oregon Trail and Carmen Sandiego too.

@hami1091 It seemed to be more of a secluded thing back then. It was a mystery to it when it first came out. Now everything is just out in the open. Everybody is showing their ass to the world. 😂

I was working for a law firm with no computer/internet. This was in the 1980s. A couple of years later, the firm got computers, and we had to transfer information from our files into the computers.

@Fungirlmmm 🙂 My how life has changed. 😂
Wraithorn · 51-55, M
I personally only got access to the internet in 1998. I went through quite a steep learning curve after that.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@Wraithorn 🤔 The drama unfolds.
RubySoo · 56-60, F
Yeap. Life was richer without these distractions.
RubySoo · 56-60, F
@Zonuss it was richer on a personal level as the people in your life got all your attention....we didnt spread ourselves out to dozens and dozens of so called friends all over the world as we do online.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
@RubySoo Is that a bad thing ? I mean we as human beings learn to adapt with the times.
Perhaps we have become so lazy with how we orchestrate our lives now with others and ourselves. 🙂

@Zonuss i use social media a lot....its a habit i cant break. I enjoy it. But i dont think it is a particularly good thing.. not for me personally. My family can all be sat in a room together watching a movie...not speaking to each other...yet all having convos with other people on fb or snapchat or wherever... or playing a game online, ordering a pizza to eat while we watch....but not a word to each other.
My parents didn't even get internet until the late 90's if I recall.

@latinbutterfly I remember when I first got a Super Nintendo. It was a life altering event. 🙂
@Zonuss I remember getting a Sega Genesis, Christmas 1989. It totally blew away our Atari 2600, of course 😂.

Me. I grew up that way. Didn’t have either until I was married.
