Going off on a slight tangent....

I was once on a church committee which had meetings in the library of the elementary school.

Before the meeting started, two of us were looking at a book on display that was about a young boy being puzzled by the things he heard adults talking about.

For example, he heard a reference to a King who reigned for 40 years, and he thought they said he "rained" for 40 years. The book showed him lost in thought, with an image of a king floating in the sky with water pouring out of him.

The two of us were laughing at every page, while the others just looked at us with serious condescending expressions, saying "it's a children's book!"

It occurred to me that I was the most educated person in the room, and the woman I was enjoying the book with was the least educated. The two of us had no problem being unabashedly amused by "children's humor", but everyone else did.

I really like that, and know it to be true. Those years I worked in a book store, I discovered and read several "YA" books that I wished I'd known about when I was still in that designated age range.

People often forget childrens' books are mostly written by adults who can't help injecting their own thoughts and feelings into their writing.
