I never read the book Cloud Atlas

I started watching the movie last night. I felt extremely confused by how the movie plot was being told.

I imagine that the book is a much more organized storyline than the movie was. Granted I have about 45 minutes to finish the film.

Can anybody offer an explanation for this story?
I have a couple of my own ideas what they were trying to convey.
