Would you/ could you use AC unit without filter screen?

yeah it just keeps dust from blocking the cooling coil. You can tape a tee shirt over the intake vents and do the same job. they make a spray to clean a dirty coil too if it does get clogged.

i wouldn't recommend it, electronics can be fussy. if all else fails, read the manual.
