Just to clarify what @beermeplease is saying….
In Canada, we have 11 or 12 stat holidays where you are entitled to the day off and still 8 hours pay (even tho you didnt work it.
If you do work the stat, then you get paid your regular hours plus a premium plus the 8 hours pay. So most non unionized places pay the equivalent of 2-1/2 the normal rate of pay for those hours worked (up to 8 hours)
Often, unionized workplaces will have negotiated even better premiums which work out to 3x normal rate for all hours worked on stat holiday.
Hope you don’t mind my explanation @beermeplease

Not guaranteed especially in retail and hospital workers, police, firefighters and other such places need to have employees working.
I work in retail and there's no such thing. I get paid $5 extra for working all day black Friday... $5...

I was very nice this year but won't be next year as a few took advantage of it

You'd THINK so. Years ago I worked for State of Idaho and employed a seasonal. I was flabbergasted she didn't get our 4th of July off. I had no way she could work in the office alone so did "informal" compensatory time.

We used to get overtime for working the holidays. My shift included Saturday night every week when I worked at Bed Bath and Beyond Corporate, and if Christmas Eve or Christmas fell on a Saturday, I had to work it.

When I worked in a bookstore 30 years ago we were closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Now I think all they get off is Christmas. Greed is all that matters in America. Not people.
bookerdana · M
Most are off,its a Federal holiday..some are off✌ TWO ftw
bookerdana · M
@Jenny1234 Its complicated,Federal Holidays are Christmas,New Years but if yer off almost everyone gets paid
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@bookerdana so does everyone go back to work tomorrow?
bookerdana · M
@Jenny1234 Nope some get two days, padi and others take it as a personal day
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
It all depends on the job. For some it's a paid holiday, for some they work but get overtime, for some they work like regular. There is no absolute rule.
DDonde · 31-35, M
That's usually how it is here for those two holidays yes
