You can’t force someone out of misery.

When you try to help someone by being supportive remember you can only try. It’s up to that person to accept or refuse help. Yeah I get depression affects everyone differently but you can at least make an effort to get out of your misery instead of constantly moaning about it.
But if someone decides to remain miserable that’s their choice.

i think some peopel get attached ot their misery and have trouble letting go of it or maybe dont have the inner resources to fight it. like "poor me" syndrome or negative or pessimistic thinkers. its frustrating to see people very depressed as it can be a downer and make one feel helpless to help them. and you are right you cant force anyone out of their psychological condition. sadly lol. i think all we can do really is try to offer some sympathy if we can spare it or empathy or offer support in a helpful manner, tell people what it is that we do to get out of depression ourselves. people supposedly learn by example the best. i personally think depression is all in the mind and we need to use the strength of our minds ot fight it, but then even the strong minded can probably succumb to depression every now and then too. depression sucks. i think the worst thing people can do is throw a pharmaceutical at it but some people do find it helpful. i guess everyone needs to follow their own path and all we can do like you said is try to give them a little nudge in a good direction.
@Penny Well said.

Many enjoy being miserable and try to bring others down with their negativity, they need to rot in the pit they dug for themselves

@wilderflower true however this was about those who drag others down too
@SW-User That’s sad.

I'm glad you've never experienced serious depression. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.
SwampFlower · 31-35, F
@wilderflower I didn't really, until I had to cope with a terminal illness. Motivation, effort, will, etc are all a product of brain chemistry and I wholeheartedly believe that now. You can't yell at someone's brain for not producing the correct levels of dopamine and serotonin anymore than you can yell at a diabetic's pancreas for not producing the right level of insulin.

It's true, they have to want to stop the misery
@SW-User You’re right.
@SW-User If only it was that easy for some.

I like trying to help because helping is noble and worth it in itself, regardless of the result. There's no point in being bitter because it didn't work, do it because it's right, and you can't lose.
@wilderflower Gosh, that's so unfair and insensitive. Not all want to be depressed. This is sad.
@LadyGrace Yes it’s sad but it’s how she wants to be.
@wilderflower I agree that some people don't try to help themselves, but then there are others that sadly, want to get better, but for some reason or other, like the chemistry in their brain, cannot help the way they feel and it makes me greatly sad when people say "it's all in their mind". It most certainly is not. If only it were that easy.

I tried. Maybe not hard enough but I did. Maybe when I was up I should have gotten away from everyone and everything that could've dragged me back down. I should have followed my intuition and did what was best for me first...
@SW-User That’s the best person to help. Yourself.

Scarcity of self value cannot be remedied by money, recognition, affection or influence.

@luctoretemergo That’s a good quote.

@luctoretemergo appreciation and not demoralization

@wilderflower internet ....
😊

Yea...support is only exactly that. Support. It's not a cure. People have to do the work to get where they want to be.
@SW-User I agree.
