I am getting into ham radio... Is it a good idea?

Am I too old for this? I am very impressed of how ham radio operators had his homemade unprocessed pork chops for supper. This has inspired me to make a brussel sprout transmitter since I am a vegan radio operator. But where could I get qualified for a veggie radio licence? Should I modulate in AM or PM?
