@MarmeeMarch I'm not at all sure that the presence of one spider indicates appalling living conditions. The spider in question may have been traveling to visit relatives somewhere in the forest and, exhausted by the journey, just sat down beside Miss Muffet for a little break.

I don't know if I agree with it, but I thought it was interesting.

I interpret it a little differently, that armed men, property, a rich folk and the law, are necessary to keep the land from being invaded and thus keep all the people of the land safe.
