New Bill Eliminates Unlimited Graduate Loans, Forces Universities to Compete on Price

The federal government is backing away from its usual role in student loans and financing higher education. Provisions in President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill,” which was signed into law on Independence Day, has provisions that begin to reverse the federal government’s role in the matter.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the bill includes restrictions on how much students can borrow as well as how they pay back their loans. The move has pushed some to reassess where they are getting loans from, and going to private lenders, who usually charge higher interest on student loans.

Starting in 2026, the era of unlimited government-backed loans will be over. The new law puts a firm cap of $100,000 on borrowing for master’s degrees and $200,000 for professional degrees. More importantly, it completely eliminates the Graduate PLUS program, a taxpayer-funded slush fund that allowed students to borrow the full, sky-high cost of attendance with no questions asked. Parents will also see new limits on how much they can borrow for their children’s education.

This move is a direct reversal of the Biden administration’s reckless policies, which paused loan payments and attempted to cancel huge amounts of student debt. Those plans would have unfairly shifted the entire burden onto the shoulders of taxpayers, including millions who never went to college or responsibly paid off their own loans. Trump’s new plan ensures that the responsibility for educational costs falls on the students and the universities themselves, not the American public.

I guess education is only a thing for the rich.

But I can't keep to find it funny that "nationalists", you know... those that prioritise the nation, want to make sure that the majority of their nation is kept as ignorant and uneducated as possible. One reason for this could be, that those without the funds and the money are just not part of that nation, and should be used and abused for cheap labor only, while the real nation enjoys the fruit of the 2nd ranked citizens labour.

@Kwek00 Yup, those without a college education must continue to pay for others college education, right?

@sunsporter1649 You are aware, that if your nation has more people that have an higher education, there is a good chance that they will contribute in a different way then flooding your labor market with cheap labor right? Espescially since you are a developed nation. But I guess you are a nationalist when it suits you and an individualist the moment you have to start contributing to that nation that you only use when it's convenient for your bigotry.

@Kwek00 So that is why you want to take money from poor people to pay for rich peoples education, eh?

Guess you missed that part, eh?

@sunsporter1649 No, I didn't... I think you missed a whole lot. BTW, using adjectives like "reckless" and "unfairly"... mean nothing if there is no argument. And in that entire thing you posted, there is none.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Kwek00 We get it, dumping billions of dollars of unpaid debt onto the shoulders of the American taxpayer is not reckless, nor is it unfair, right?
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 No, you pay it by taxes... you know, that word and concept you don't like because you don't care about your nation but you care about yourself. Fairness of taxes need to be measured by the fairness of the economic system. There are long debates over that, none of which you understand Sporter.
sunsporter1649 · 70-79, M
@Kwek00 Yup, the 65% of American taxpayers that do not have college degrees must pay for the college education of the 35% that do, nice and fair, right?
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@sunsporter1649 That's not what is happening, you almost pretend if the 35% don't pay taxes. It's not a 1 on 1 deal. Next to that, the full 100% of taxpayers should also pay for the federal schools, which represent the education before college levels. But the only way you can make this work, is to simplify it so much that it doesn't even represent reality anymore.

@Kwek00 Where can I go to get my free college eddukation?

@sunsporter1649 You had nothing to bring in, but this is the point where we hit absolute rock bottom. Who ties your shoelaces Sporter? Or is the brain capable of stripping on velcro?
