That’s sort of the funny thing. To be so vigilant of queer things entering popular culture, while being clueless of queer things in popular culture.
chrisCA · M
@CopperCicada These are the same people who saw nothing wrong with racial stereotypes portrayed in cartoons.
BohemianBabe · M
@CopperCicada Perhaps these Righties actually want queer things entering them.

Their heads are already exploding on Facebook.

I cant get past how far down the toilet America has gone that these things matter to anyone..😷
TrashCat · M
These right wingers have serious sex hangups. Velma has been eating at the Y for almost 50 years. 😃

An invention that untwists undies would be a top-seller at a MAGA rally.

She literally is Kalli.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@Burnley123 My only issue with it personally was the decision to make her a lesbian. Not that I have an issue with lesbians or their representation. But with her having been implied bisexual for decades to be more palatable to a 70s audience she actually ended up being one of the first characters depicted as bi that was not a hypersexual stereotype.

I actually don't like when they change important traits about characters, like their sexuality. But when it comes to Velma, it totally makes sense.
For decades, people have joked about how obvious it is that Shaggy is a stoner. So eventually the live action movies decided to lean in. They made references to Shaggy smoking pot and then eventually, in the Netflix show, he just outright said "you better drive, I'm too stoned." The Scooby fanbase made Shaggy a stoner, so the writers said, why not?
It's the same thing with Velma. She's been a gay icon for decades. And it's not like she had romantic storylines, she was pretty much asexual in 99% of Scooby media.
So yeah, in this one particular case, it totes makes sense to give a character the gay.

They'll be no need to cancel anything. It will be one season and done through lack of viewership.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow That was my point. It's not going to perform well and things will go back to the way they were before with the next version... Because ultimately what people want is the nostalgia fix whether they know it or not. It's a comfort thing.
Then, in a few years someone else will come along and try to reinvent the wheel again.
It's just all part of a cycle.

@Whodunnit What are you basing that on? And as the original post points out she has been portrayed as at a minimum bisexual since the 70s to anyone who is not completely blind. The only thing that is changed is it can be openly stated without getting fined for violating bullshit censorship regulations from like the 30s or 40s.
Whodunnit · M
@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow I'm basing that on the observation of media consumption, specifically the comics and cartoon industry. Each generation wants things the way they remember them, which is a large reason why specifically comic canon is a nightmare to navigate.
As for the whole 'queer coding' argument, I find it rather offensive that people even entertain the notion that LGBT people must conform to certain stereotypes in media.
When I was growing up with early versions of Scooby-Doo the sexuality of the characters never entered my mind for a second. I liked Velma because she was by far the most intelligent character. The facts that she was bookish, slightly nerdy, and brave were far more interesting that whether she liked cock or pussy. It didn't even enter my mind.
I find it a little disturbing that anyone was actively sexualising children's cartoon characters actually.
Anyway, her sexuality is besides the point. I think this version of the show is going to fall on it's arse because it's too different from the Scooby-Doo shows we fondly remember.

Cartoons are for kids and leftists don't have any kids but right wingers do. So what's the business sense in retooling a character to appeal to leftist kids who don't exist? SMH.
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@graphite Still doubling down on your teen pregnancy flex?
And if they are for kids why are you clowns the only one losing their shit over them?
And nobody is "retooling" anything. Velma has been very obviously coded queer since the 70s. But oblivious is the definition of conservatism.

Wait, are they done with the mermaid already?
PicturesOfABetterTomorrow · 41-45, M
@Elessar I can't keep track of everything they are upset about at this point.
I have my own issue with the current decision with Velma but not the problem right wingers have.

@PicturesOfABetterTomorrow Well, the fact they can only focus on one thing at a time helps. 😜

And you can't tell me Shaggy wasn't up for anything.

who is that?
