I think it's another one of those stupid things people complain about because they're not used to things looking different than they're used to. The little mermaids ethnicity literally does not matter in any way, shape, or form in the movie itself nor does it affect the story. It doesn't even get mentioned at all. It's purely a visual difference & yeah idk why people can't handle that.
I don't think ethnicity matter with most things as long as it's not a major point of the story. Like I saw a meme where someone took a Martin Luther King documentary & put Mel Gibson on the cover. That's not even a decent argument because MLK's story majorly involved race & that was a huge part of the story. So yeah if that was changed then by all means people should be bothered. Would you acknowledge the right turned out to be right on several points about the vaccines? They are not needed for kids, they do not slow the spread of the disease? Vaccines always should have been concentrated on unhealthy people and people over age 50. Vaccine mandates were stupid, people should have freedom of choice. If you are pro choice on abortion you should be pro choice on vaccination.

Here's what I care about. Rockstar has nearly stopped support for Red Dead Redemption 2. Bugs are running rampant, and I cannot make any headway in my trading business. I've lost 3 perfect pelts, and an untold amount of good and poor pelts in the last 30 minutes alone because the friggin game keeps bugging out when I summon my meat wagon. When I compare that shit to the color of one of Disney's fish people, hahaha I think my problems are bigger. Now! If anyone else has a problem with a black Ariel, don't watch the movie! There will always be the classic cartoon to fall back on. Sorry, rant over ;)
I don't think it's as much about skin color as it's about changing the appearance of a character that kept its fixed traits for decades but it's still remarkable how many adults seem to lose their shit about stuff for kids. I mean, if you don't like it, don't watch it. 🤷♀️ Problem solved.
I just find it weird that they created an entire movie changing the race of the character. Why didn’t they just make a new movie like how they did princess and the frog?

This whole "controversy", too, has drawn so much attention to this mermaid remake that otherwise would've only reached a niche audience, so from a marketing standpoint it's probably a hugely successful strategy. Technically, I can sort of see their point. Not only are the Disney films a rite of passage that has been unchanged for generations that they want to hand down to their own children... but, how many red heads were in a lead role in any Disney cartoon in the 80's and 90's???
Sure, I know that we have Merida in Brave now - but, back then, Ariel was single handedly flying the flag for redheads. Most of the parents who will be buying these films may not know about the latest films or the newer characters because they didn't grow up with them.

Until one week ago or so they were complaining about a brand new black elf character on the LOTR series, and in that case nothing of this could apply. Before that, a black actress being cast as the 3rd sister in Obi Wan. They're just annoyed that minorities get represented in media.

It's better that they throw their hate at a multimillion company that certainly has the resources to handle them (assuming this controversy wasn't seeded by the company itself, for pure marketing purposes), than if they redirected the same energy towards some minority or women as per their usual.
