Name some Common Ground

What are some things liberals and conservatives have in common? For example, many on both sides want to help poor people.
Do conservatives want to help poor people ? I alway got the impression they considered poverty a character flaw. “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps, man ! What, how dare you have no boots !” That sort of thing.

@bijouxbroussard At face value I agree with you but being here in the South I know too many people of varied backgrounds who kind of think that way and they are not completely uncharitable but they are just old fashioned. Sort of the Horatio Alger model.
Work hard, do right and you will succeed. They don't dwell in details.

Both sides share many common goals. Both want there to be less mass shootings, both want to be less reliant on fossil fuels, both want a strong economy, etc. Most individuals from either side share many of the same goals, they just have different ideas on how to achieve those goals.

This is excluding radicals from either side, who have a whole different set of values.

IF, and that is a huge if, we could get past the politicians whoring themselves out for votes, and the ultra radicals on both sides, I think we all want essentially the same things and could find a middle ground.

There would be sticking points, e.g., the 2nd Amendment and its interpretation and application, but again, there is a middle ground that could be arrived at by sensible people.
Hillary's Downfall in the 2016 election, her comment about all the deplorables voting for President Trump. Backfired in a major way.
@Experienced33 Her downfall was more the fact that she didn't visit Michigan or Ohio or Wisconsin. She thought she had those states and didn't bother campaigning there. Trump on the other hand did spend time there and was able to get those people to vote.

Affordable food, shelter & other essentials.

Not sure liberals want to help people.

Let's see, the both claim Lincoln was in their party.

Many on both sides believe in the rule of law -- just can't agree when and how it is being abused.
Contemporary politics aside, I have never seen conservatism and progressivism as disjoint things. In the economic sphere there is a continuum between relying on full unregulated market activities to statist solutions to problems. And in the social sphere there is a continuum between relying on the statement of basic rights, full stop, and government actions to help resolve social ills.

In truth, people from right to left embrace a variety of market and state solutions. A variety of traditionalism and progressive solutions.

What really seems to differ are the dreams of the most ideal societies. I am terrified of the dreams of both the American right and left.

Overall goals are same, just the way to go about it are different.

Better to ask how to get two religious fanatics to do anything together.

So how do you get the Muslim world to agree with the Christian world?

Answer that and you'll solve two problems at once. That war has been going on for over two thousand years. We have barely touched on the answer.

Both want to expand throughout the world.
wildbill83 · 41-45, M
that problem already has a solution, He just hasn't come back yet...
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@wildbill83 your a prime example of the problem.

No Muslim will agree with you. Much less any atheist.

Both love their children.

They share a humanity. BTW most of today's conservatives would have been liberals a few years ago. And most liberals now would have been considered communists/fascists a few years ago.
BigBulge · 41-45, M
WHAT ?! Conservatives say, "I've got mine. The hell with you !" Why do you think that rich people pay no taxes ?

REMsleep · 41-45, F
Both sides believe that America is very special in this world and has an obligation to lead things politically by example.
How they each want to go about it is very different.

Both sides believe that far too many Americans are uneducated and poor. Each side believes different things about why that is and how to fix it.

Both sides generally agree that healthcare is too expensive and convoluted.
