You're have to do some mental gymnastics, to put him in that argue. At a minimum, this is carefully worded statement that can give him a future "yeah, I was one of those who loved her", or "no, look at my statement, I did no love her".

Going from memory, I recall when the story broke, that she confronted him with his mistress on the ski slopes, and they were fighting, as Ivana was skiing backward.
