Civil political discussions searching for pragmatic ways to govern actually were the norm from WWII up to the 90's. Even during the 60's with the anti-Vietnam War protests and the Civil Rights Movement, politicians in office from the two political parties remained civil in their debates and discussion. Effort was made to remain respectful of the decorum of institutions and their elected officials.

I would argue political discussion has gotten less violent in revent history. Incidents like Jan 6th aside.

@Doomflower We're trying. It really became bad after that gentleman with the melanin became president. Folks started saying all sorts of nasty stuff. And then the Annoying Orange ran for president, and all bets were off.

@LordShadowfire yeah.

In the 80s, the parties frequently worked together. The current animosity really began during the 90s and has only gotten worse since.

My father held them all the time. Both political and religious discussions. Some did get up and leave others stayed the coarse. This was in the 1980s.

So you know my father was a Democrat. My brothers in-laws were strict republicans.
Yet every Christmas my father was invited knowing full well what would happen.
It worked both ways!

I'm thinking perhaps the only chance in recent history was during the Eisenhower years and during the Carter years. If it didn't happen then, it probably didn't happen. Sad.
When Tip O'Neil was speaker, both sides would argue their positions then go out to dinner together. Politics were much more civil then.

Yes

There was a time when it was the norm. When it went downhill was about the time Bill Clinton ran for president. Until then, presidential candidates weren't allowed to interrupt each other or otherwise be rude during debates.

@LordShadowfire I think Donald Trump elevated rude to a virtue. And too many of the American people went along with it.
