I personally don’t have a problem with religion because I’m an atheist. Religion to me is like watching a documentary about another species.
Doometernal · 26-30, M
@Human1000 makes sense. Not an atheist but I have questions that don't make logical sense.

If God does exist, then why do you need to pray constantly for example? And why does God punish "sinners"? Why can't he create all good people?

That brings up to the question of free will. If our lives are predetermined then did we really sin? And if free will doesn't exist then you should hate God for creating you instead of praying.

Either we have free will and what we do cannot be considered as sin or we don't have free will and it doesn't make sense to pray to God .

@Doometernal Exactly! The problem of evil. God would need to be either evil or not omnipotent to allow evil. In either case why worship such a being? And even if this problem could be solved, why worship at all? Why would such a being even demand to be worshipped? And out of fear? Is that love or a threat?

Makes no sense at all…free will creates the whole host of issue you describe.

In the end we’re just smarter chimps…no logic to any of it.
Some of those books go through periods of correction. Indeed, interpretations do change, then someone comes along and says "how did we get so far off course" and leads a movement back.
@Doometernal I can't speak for all religions, but some believe that men were inspired by God: prophets.
Doometernal · 26-30, M
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP no such thing as men inspired by God. Reminds me of a cult leader.

Men have flaws and a lot of them.while God according to them don't have any.
@Doometernal Well, as long as you are certain that there is no such thing as men being inspired by God, then yes, you are right to believe that all holy texts are merely flawed works by flawed men
I understand the concept of faith and the concept of God.
I don't.
But you cannot tell me to read books written by men who think they had visions from God.
If you understand religion, then you will understand that this is part of the religion gig.
Northwest · M
@Doometernal Google it. 🤣
Doometernal · 26-30, M
@Northwest it's a meme which downplays the misfortune of others.

If that'swhat you meant then read the newspaper headlines thr next morning after Tulsa massacre. You'll lose faith in people btw

For me, there is a gulf between belief and religion.

Religion is how some organized group wants me to worship, too often because it benefits the leaders.

Belief is my own personal reaction to a Higher Power. Prayer is not a complaint hotline, nor is it the currency for a vending machine. It's the way I try to understand and align with my God, not try to force God to understand me. God already understands me. That's the nature of God.

The practice of religion far too often creates barriers. And conflict. And judgment for people who are as flawed as those they judge. Like me.

Because I could personally not rationalize "adjustment" in religion - is it eternal truth or isn't it? - I chose this path. I don't expect anyone to agree with me - it's not necessary.

Disclaimer: I do not need to and will not attempt to 'defend my faith.' It's how I believe.

@Mamapolo2016 good answer.

I agree with the most.

Yes the zeitgeist changes and so does the interpretation of the scriptures.

@TurtlePink well I enjoy your posts too as long as they aren't too weird
EuphoricTurtle · 41-45, M
that's why religion requires its followers to hold faith over evidence and logic
Doometernal · 26-30, M
@EuphoricTurtle agreed.

A population with critical thinking never works in a society where the people who hold the power wanted to keep the status quo
iamelijah · 26-30, M
I have nothing to say. I'm gonna leave my comments here while enjoying myself reading the thread.
Doometernal · 26-30, M
@iamelijah haha. Dont worry my posts are clean. Idiots who post garbage with a black and white view about the world probably blocked me long time ago anyways 🤣
redredred · M
The real problem with religion is that not a shred of the what they all profess has ANY evidence behind it. The second biggest problem is all religions way under estimate the real complexity, splendor, mystery and beauty of the universe. Simple stories about grandfathers-in-the-sky and eternity in the clouds or in a furnace simply can’t begin to compare with the reality of the universe.
Doometernal · 26-30, M
@redredred agreed.

The bible was written by men.
Scriptures, scrolls, old myths and passed down stories, cherry picked to suit a narrative.
Developing societies in need of direction. How else to explain the unexplainable. And how best to keep people in line? Fear. And how can you dispel that which you cannot see?
Faith in a God is fine for many. It still gives people direction that dont have the internal strength to find it on their own.
In turn, it also is the source of generations of conflict, hypocrisy, the sense of superiority.
So, the problem really isnt religion, the problem is people. With or without it, we can be a horrible species.
Doometernal · 26-30, M
@Carla yes. Agreed. That's what I was discussing with a person here below. Check it out.

Unless you yourself have experienced the supernatural in this world ones perception may differ from another. Religion is just an institution guided by intuition and morale. How we conduct ourselves personally is our own business. Only God can judge us in the end. 🌞

Simply because a text can have different interpretations doesn't mean it's bad text. And just because when holy text explains only part of faith, that doesn't mean it's bad text.

There are as many roads to hey is there are people on the planet. Religion is an attempt to delineate and clarify the tenants of one's faith. Sometimes that means obscuring them; names or means illuminating them.
Doometernal · 26-30, M
@Graylight as i said, books are written by men and there are flaws in it.

Trying to find an interpretation is equivalent to trying to filter ocean water for a tiny bit of gold .

We know there's ridiculous amount of gold in oceans but the whole concept of extracting it is flawed to begin with
Harriet03 · 41-45, F
The problems with religion are to numerous to mention.
dontbekoi · 36-40, F
The bible was written in Hebrew and then it was translated to Greek and then it was translated to English by William Tyndale (in the 7th century)

So, it very well may have different interpretations not only to the translators but also by the individuals who read it.

Also, I can see where you are coming from. I often times question the validity of historical text that has been translated so many times. I also question any reference of division and hate. Those are not the words of God but of man attempting to spread seeds of discourse.
