Are you supportive of your police force, or are they another uncontrollable dynamic in society?

There’s a middle ground. I have to take incidents in their context. I know some great officers personally I know there’s horrible ones for whatever reason are kept around. It’s no different from every other organization of authority. They just have guns and training. Others have banks and forms. It’s a different animal altogether. Not all cops are bad. But not all cops are good.

Of course I support the police. They're the ones who'll come to protect your life in the middle of the night when you can't do so.

That said, we've militarized police in the US to the point they're now almost indistinguishable from a military squad. Yes, times are dangerous and yes, firepower grows and yes, crime still exists, but there's no reason to send 30 men in disguised tactical armor to serve an arrest warrant on a long time junkie who lives alone. There's no reason why, when asking if it's okay to turn down a road after some kind of law enforcement activity on my corner, I need to be treated like an annoying insect and yelled at when asking a legitimate directional question. You're a cop by choice. You're also a dick by choice.

I know the police and community very well. I've been part of it. They're hard workers, selfless, brave and giving. But we also rely on them to be our national military in a war we're fighting amongst ourselves. No situation like that ever ends up well in the long term. When they're not being mental health counselors or medics or dog catchers or county code enforcement or civil attorneys or peacemakers.

I support the police, and think it's hypocritical and stupid not to.

I do understand that sometimes there are bad cops. But they should be dealt with individually.

I don't like police but in saying that I don't make a whole lot of trouble for police to respond to so I can keep my distance

Not as bad as some places but definitely not a positive force overall.

Both. We need them, a functional police force is a cornerstone of civilized life. But the job attracts - and creates, complete douchebags.

In Canada, they are called Police Services.
In the small city where I live, they are respected.
