In the U.S.A. we have socialism all right...for the super wealthy and corporations.
They get bail-outs, subsides, all kinds of tax loopholes, off-shore tax-havens, etc. Everyone else gets nearly unregulated capitalism.

"Our upside down welfare state is socialism for the rich, free enterprise for the poor."

William O. Douglas, (1898-1980) Justice of the Supreme Court
RopinTexan · 31-35, M
@badminton Yep, that’s called cronyism/corporatism. That’s one of my biggest problems with the American right wing. They say they want capitalism, but what they really want is corporatism, which is not capitalist in the least.

Good analysis

Actual Socialist: "How do we have people in this country with hunger problems while grocery stores are throwing away at least 30 percent of the food they get?"
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@ViciDraco many Americans have no idea how many ugly tomatoes go into a Domino’s pizza or how many nasty ingredients go into a Taco Bell dinner

But FoxNews has indoctrinated them to be experts on voting rights, the economy and social-economic theory
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
You couldn’t define socialism if your life depended on it.

Why should we expect anyone to be able to engage you in an intelligent conversation?
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
I don’t care that Bezos is filthy rich, I want him to pay his fair share for the maintenance of our society that enabled him to become so wealthy - and to treat his employees better because he’s often a dick to them.

The latter is something I hope the markets will sort out in due time, but the former requires a change in our system. We’ve been coddling the wealthy for decades now, with poor results.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Just last weekend I realized while packing I needed new board shorts. Used Amazon. Cheaper and the board shorts were there when I arrived. Why doesn’t Amazon sell liquor? @QuixoticSoul
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@jackjjackson I am more counting on the labor markets in that regard tbh - Amazon is already dealing with insane turnover, and internally there are concerns their labor supplies will simply dry up. They pay reasonably well for “unskilled” jobs, but conditions are so shitty people are leaving anyhow. At some point, they will have to make adjustments.

Anecdotally, Amazon used to be a similar cesspit on the engineering side, but were forced to mellow out somewhat due to industry backlash. I know that I ignore Amazon headhunters as a policy, and don’t shy from telling them why.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Perhaps that will be the downfall. In the even intermediate term the Amazon model can’t be good for any of us. @QuixoticSoul

What kind of socialism would you be talking about here? Liberal socialism? Utopian? Eco? Democratic?

And just what are you implying is better? Capitalism? Which form? Laissez-faire or free-market capitalism? Or is it state capitalism and welfare capitalism. Mixed economy?

(I'll give you a hint: it's the one that includes socialism. )
Graylight · 51-55, F
@RopinTexan there is no General type of socialism and we don't practice free market capitalism. We have a mixed economy, meaning that we employ and utilize both capitalist and socialist practices and ideologies.

Kind of hard to find half your identity is the thing you hate most.
Baremine · 70-79, C
@Graylight but socialism is the cancer that kills capitalism. Socialism leads to communism where the middle class doesn't exist and the working man gets royally screwed. At least under capitalism you stand a chance of getting ahead.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@Baremine Right. Because in 200 years, roads and bridges, financial safety nets public libraries where people learn, medical clinics where people are healed, emergency services that save property and homes everyday, mail service that gets a box or envelope anywhere in the world you wanted to be, educational systems that teach our youth... All just corrupting our society.

And I'm curious - with the middle class becoming the lower class, housing becoming untenable and measurably less services available to those who most need them, who's benefiting from capitalism again? The top 1% Of U.S. Households Hold 15 Times More Wealth Than Bottom 50% Combined.

Your analytical skills and ability to translate complex socio-economic into SW posts is amazing and so on the money. How did you get to be the way you are?
So you have never actually had a job before.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
And Conservatives remind me of those incontinents who still use the phrase ‘ma daddy’ like it’s a badge of honour.

No wonder Republicans and Conservatives alike are drowning in their own misery right now
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@RopinTexan when the rich use their influence to ensure that legislation makes it easier to keep a larger share of what they’ve earned, do you think that’s ok?
RopinTexan · 31-35, M
@JoeyFoxx I suppose that would depend on how they do so. If they do it by voting, I don’t see anything wrong with that. Everyone is going to vote in ways that will positively influence themselves and their families. Now if they’re going to donate large sums of money to a particular political party, then things get murky. That’s one reason why I dislike political parties.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@RopinTexan yeah… that’s how the rich do it. They get in line with everyone else and vote.

If you believe that, then there’s no much to talk about.
Biffed · 26-30, M
That's what I been saying!
Hmmmm.... as Jeff Bezos thanked his workers, underpaid, for helping him reach space and he talked about his awe moment he heard about when people see the earth from afar. Hmmm.
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Gasoline also smells bad. @QuixoticSoul
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@jackjjackson so do you, but I only rarely mention it.

🤪
jackjjackson · 61-69, M
Good one JF 🤙🏼. @JoeyFoxx

Rabid state sponsored capitalists are no better
DDonde · 31-35, M
I want a fair wage that covers the cost of living. If I can't get it from the socialists, who do I get it from? I work my ass off and changing my job is a pain in the ass.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@RopinTexan Walmart, Walgreens, CVS and others are the poster children for the GOP.

Why isn’t the GOP calling them out for being unethical?
RopinTexan · 31-35, M
@JoeyFoxx Probably because those companies are on their side and give them money.

I don’t like the GOP. I don’t like political parties in general.
JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
@RopinTexan so, you’re a new-libertarian

Which is another way of saying you are against anybody else’s idea that doesn’t match your vague and indecipherable worldview

Gotcha
SW-User
How do those boots taste?
RopinTexan · 31-35, M
@SW-User Pretty gross. Like all the socialist excrement I just stepped in.
