*A-10
In reality there are mixed views on this.
CantExplain · 61-69, M
@spjennifer I had an A-10 buzz me from behind while I was driving once on a long stretch of road in rural Kansas. I didn’t hear it it was on top me…SURPRISE!! I figured the pilot was doing a little practicing.

@CantExplain That's what some enemies experience when being "buzzed" by an A10, feel the Brrrrttttttt and then feel nothing... 😲

@spjennifer Don't run.....you will only die tired

Hard not to love that beast, I’ll be sad when it’s finally retired. Doesn't realky belong on the modern battlefield at this point - but since when do we ever find ourselves on one?
Human1000 · M
@QuixoticSoul We have F-35s, tanks, various antitank weapons from the ground, and when all else fails Molotov cocktails lobbed from abandoned buildings!
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Human1000 When it comes to CAS, none of those things work nearly as well as the venerable Warthog. No reason to fix what isn’t broken.

@QuixoticSoul It seems it’s not going anywhere for the time being...

Yes, that has been a problem with much of the military's equipment.

While the A10 may well be 40 years old, the purpose for it's continued existence has evolved, it is currently being used for Close Air Support or CAS. Many state that the F35 is the replacement for it but do we really want a $100M+ stealth fighter jet being shot at by AK 47's and RPG's? Ask any grunt on the ground how much we still need the A10's capability and see what kind of an answer you get. We still need the A10 or a replacement for it that doesn't cost $100M, the F35 wasn't designed to take the punishment that the A10 can absorb and still survive...
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@spjennifer Shoot a manpad at a tank and see how it does - meanwhile the A-10 doesn’t have anything like a tank’s armor. MANPADs are pea shooters compared to an RPG - but they maneuver and are meant for very light skinned targets, so they do the job.
spjennifer · 56-60, T
@QuixoticSoul Agreed but the A10 does have 1200 lbs of Titanium armour protectng the pilot and vital systems, it's designed to take plenty of abuse, the F35 doesn't have any armour...

@spjennifer Yup, the famous tub. Rumored to have occasionally stood up to 57mm, though really it’s intended to protect against HMGs. An RPG will go through it like it’s nothing at all - but just try and hit a jet with an RPG.

On the other hand ....

They’re basically flying artillery. Good against a ground target but worse than useless when it needs to defend itself.

There was one month in 91 when the USAF lost 5 A10s to the Iraqis in quick succession.
