Trump is thumbing his nose at the Emoluments Clause. It is living out his comment during the campaign that he could shoot someone on Fifth Avenue and get away with it. Trump actually believes that he is above the law, and doesn't even have to pretend that he isn't corrupt any more. He is counting on Republicans and his adoring loyalists to protect him and support his corruption.

You know, it makes sense. The higher up you go, the more buttoned up your candidates for office become. Governors and senators wear suits and live by a strategy of not making asses of themselves (whether that always works is another question).
Ridiculously enough, poor and working class folks from rural areas see him as more like them and less statesmanly. There are parts of the country who think science, higher education, and even a well crafted sentence are the stuff of either sinners or elitists.
