Hello Americans! What are your thoughts about the arrest of Karen Garner in Loveland Colorado in 2020?

For info, Karen Garner is a 74 year old dementia sufferer. She was 73 at the time and weighed less than 100lbs.
She was arrested for failing to pay for goods at a shop.
During the arrest, her arm was broken and a shoulder dislocated. She didn’t receive any medical attention for 6.5 hours. Whilst she was sat in a cell, the numerous officers involved were sat at the station desk watching their body cam footage, laughing about the events and describing the “pop” her arm made as it was forced out of her shoulder socket.
Following an attorney obtaining the station footage, the police chief stated that he knew nothing of the incident until the footage was aired. He also (along with numerous other senior officials) claimed this was an isolated incident, and the department is honest and hard serving.
What do you think?

My mother died of dementia, and afterward, because I felt I had lacked understanding of what she experienced, I began to work with the elderly suffering from dementia.

The police who made those comments are monsters. They should have their own arms broken and dislocated, but they will not be punished except in the court of public opinion, because it is VERY very easy to break elderly bones, and their union will try to defend them in that way.

The ones who should be arrested, IMO, are her family and/or caregivers.

First of all for everyone defending the cops.
You may not know a person's medical history but you can see with your eyes an elderly frail lady in a confused state. Let's say for sake of argument she was acting totally normal and actually posing a danger to the cops, needing to be restrained by force. Why delay medical treatment? How does the boss not know what has happened? I'm sure incident reports need to be written about that.

For those bringing black lives matter into this, the original post does not indicate race at all.

As to for shoplifting, 1 innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, 2, I point that out because that is where her mental capacity and state come into play.

Ok rant over. Bye

[c=004A59]It doesn't surprise me. The police aren't on the side of the people. And yet we pay horrendous property taxes to support this kind of behavior.[/c]
Sounds like a terrible situation. This is what is turning a lot of people against cops.

For the info:

Did the police know at the time of arrest she had dementia - NO

If she had dementia, why was she allowed to roam the streets buy herself

Before you start attacking the police, where are her carers that should be looking after her in the first place
@Oneofthestormboys Ima try to find this video.
@nedkelly It doesn't matter. The police shouldn't be handling anyone so roughly unless their life is in danger. If they are in fear for their life from someone over 70years of age and under 100 pounds, they are in the wrong line of work.
MaliaAgain · 36-40, F
@nedkelly you should watch the video. I posted it in the comments

They were ALL in on it, officrs get a paid vacation and she gets an undisclosed amount for her pain and suffering...just a thought I hope she's ok. 💰

@Oneofthestormboys [c=004A59]Yes, I keep thinking it could have been my mum or one of my aunts. Alzheimer's is in the family.[/c]
@SW-User
Just think about what kind of people need training to convince them it's wrong to rough up an obviously frail elderly person and then mock her.
I was thinking that very thing: who tf needs training not to abuse a senior and then laugh about it ? That’s someone who needs to be in prison themselves.
There’s a lot about the culture of law enforcement that needs to change—the fact that bullies seem to be over represented in that vocation, to start. 😞

Seems like it (at least from an outside perspective as I’m not American). I’ve got a few friends who are policemen, and they are trained to de-escalate, which results in far less violence and danger to themselves. They’re pretty shocked about the policing fundamentals in the states. @bijouxbroussard

I think theft is wrong, resisting arrest is wrong, and mistreatment of suspects is equally wrong.

I think the way she was treated was indefensible, right from the start. I don't know if Garner had picked up a few inexpensive items and left the store without paying, before this time. The reports I read just said that she'd them given back when stopped, and was walking back home when stopped and arrested.

[c=800000]Those cops should end up in prison - in general population, with everyone knowing who they are and what they did. And let "prison justice" take it's course.......[/c][c=800000]"rectal justice" in the prison shower is most recommended......[/c]
Oneofthestormboys · 100+, M
@theAlchemist And the authorities who claimed they knew nothing about it, and that despite that it was an isolated incident?
theAlchemist · 56-60, M
@Oneofthestormboys [c=800000]Them as well. Butt boys they all can be.[/c]

Hadnt heard of this before but yes it’s an outrage if true. Our policing system is absurdly punitive and cruel and of course we reward that cruelty with constant budget increases. It’s Disgusting
Jimmy2016 · 61-69, M
🤔...The 3 cops resigned from their jobs...They should have been fired...cops names are Austin Hopp, Daria Jalali and Tyler Blackett.
Oneofthestormboys · 100+, M
@Jimmy2016 You’ll find that their immediate superiors didn’t care much either. Also, the police chief claimed he knew nothing about it until the footage of the station conversation aired…
Oneofthestormboys · 100+, M
Oh, and “it’s an isolated incident” he claimed (whilst knowing nothing about it).
I think it's horribly abusive and they should ALL get prison time. Thats so horrible. Hope they all lose their jobs.
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
I think they should lose their jobs without any money and be in prison for abuse.
Oneofthestormboys · 100+, M
I totally agree with you. This business made me sick to the stomach.@SatanBurger
SatanBurger · 36-40, F
@Oneofthestormboys Honestly that's pretty extreme to do that and then make fun of her after. That's def. prison worthy but cops will get off like they usually do.
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
It's either still ongoing or perhaps they're awaiting out of court settlemnt.

I think a jury is going to award her millions of dollars and all police directly involved will be fired.
Oneofthestormboys · 100+, M
I certainly would @FreeSpirit1. Will it matter in the end though? Some things are way bigger than money…

I think people suck and always have.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
I think the Dept is going to get sued

@DeluxedEdition hopefully. Her kids aren't her care takers

@Oneofthestormboys this kind of shit happens all the time. The media is always looking to make a dollar at anyone’s expense

@SnowBlack It’s absolutely awful isn’t it?
I’m not sure what’s worse - the actions of the officers, or the repeated attempts of the authorities to sweep it under the carpet.
Imagine if it was one of their mothers? Or one of ours?
The whole world knows about this now, and it’s got to be one of the worst examples of policing I’ve ever seen.
