@JohnnyNoir Thank you. Could deer be among the "critters"? They can cause a lot of damage to trees by grazing on the bark.

Looks like trails where ants nested on the tree . In africa ants used to build tunnels with mud on the trunk of a tree and if you brushed the mud and ants away this is what was left .
