How do you get dogs to like you?

Do you mean - how do you meet dogs and get a friendly response?
Or do you mean how do you build a bond and lasting friendship with a dog?

Learn to read their body language.
Don't try to force contact with a dog that is timid or shy.
Be relaxed, confident and soft.
See Cesar Milan's videos on meeting dogs.

Look at other dog whisperers' videos too, as there are different methods.

On meeting dogs -
1. Always ask the owner's permission to say hello to or pet their dog.
2. Never approach working dogs - that means dogs on duty, wearing a jacket which says something like "assistance dog".
May be blind, sniffer/customs/police, stock working dogs, guard dogs in the back of tradesmen's trucks and so on.
These dogs must not be distracted from their work and need to have an almost totally exclusive relationship with their owner. The exception is when they are not on duty and the owner says it's okay.

If you have interesting smells on you, the dog will often be more interested.

If a dog is wagging its tail and leaning forward to meet you, feel free to offer it your hand to sniff and then gently caress it around the neck. If it leans into the touch, you can caress or massage it more firmly.
Each dog has its own tastes and preferences. Their characters are highly individual, but their body language is always honest and reliable.

If a dog is neither forward nor shrinking, approach sideways, look sideways at him, blink you eyelids a few times; this indicates non-aggressive and friendly intent in dog language.
Kneel or squat so you eyes are nearer to his level. Let him smell you. Be very gentle with dogs of this type.

If you're thinking of getting a dog as a companion, please read up on their health and psychological needs, training, and any local laws on registration, vaccinations, de-sexing and public behavioural expectations. It's a huge responsibility and commitment to own a dog. One should be prepared to look after them for the whole of their life span which can be around 8 - 14 years depending on the breed.

We have four dogs, Chihuahuas. They don't like me, they love me. I love them too..

Why?
There are rules, first thing is they all know I am the boss and If I say something they listen. I take them off lead, and them listening to me is for their safety and they know it. There is a pack and hierarchy - I am the dominant dog. This is the way it has to be.
I respect them - they can do things I can NOT do, I can do things they can not do and they respect me.
I do not castrate my friends, that would seem to be a strange way to treat a friend. I started off with one male, I got him a mate and we bred them several times.. When we no longer wanted them to have puppies, I took him some distance to get a vasectomy - I did not castrate him. These two now "practice" when she goes into heat and have an entirely normal relationship... My Vet says he wants to come back as a dog in my home.. Again I respect them....
I cook for them - I know exactly what they are eating and I must be doing ok because our male is 14 years old and is in perfect health - muscular, great physical specimen, very bright... They are all in perfect health.
I spend TIME with them... they are NOT ignored...
I accommodate them and their needs... and desires... We have a doggy door in our house to our fenced yard and I have one in our boat as well to give them freedom of movement..
I LET them be dogs - I do not dominate them into behaviour that is not natural... That is part of how I respect them..
I recognize clearly the personality differences between each dog... I am not sure if they learned how to speak or I learned how to listen but we communicate at a very high level...
Knell down to their eye level, allow them to sniff my fingers, talk in a calm soothing low voice. Avoiding sudden movements.

Talk with them, give them cuddles and play with them

Purchase a dog with a good mild mannered temperament

Dogs love me. I speak to them while smiling because I love dogs. I squat down for them to come closer and just continue to talk to them. In just a minute their tail starts wagging and I keep talking to them until they want a hug or be petted. I never reach out to touch them until they push their head under my hand.

Depends on the dog... but usually I let them come to me and sniff me and I can down real low to seem less scary.

Maybe even trying to do a dog version of their play bow and let's go play...

Or sniffs, and pets, maybe a little food if I got some...
