They have very poor vision (like 20/200 for ppl) and so they can see things as blurry moving things.

Insects, bits of fluff or dust, cobwebs moving in an airflow can ALL trigger this.

Mine does it whenever Amazon crosses into town. About 5 mins after he does the same you mentioned, they show up.

It could be that he is HEARING something that is upsetting to him, in the higher registers beyond human hearing. It could be that he is looking around trying to FIND the source of the sound that only he can hear.
