I Wrote Lines As A Punishment

I never got lines at school, but my parents made me do them if I got a bad report (at primary school, that was coming home with a frowny face in your report book -- yes, really -- and later getting a bad comment in your journal.)

I had to write a letter of apology to the teacher as well, and hand in my lines to him or her. It was normally 50 or 100 (I once got 500 and that was an ordeal!) It felt a bit weird because none of the other kids I knew had to do it.

I didn't have to do it often because I was a well-behaved child generally.

Lines were a school punishment, but they had to be done at home and handed in first thing the following morning. It was all right if I got them done without my parents knowing, but if they did find out, all was not well.

@oneofnine You asked I was wondering what your teachers made of it when you handed in lines they had not given you to do.

I just awoke with a memory of my CDT teacher in year 6 [US: fifth grade]. I was crap at crafts like wood and metal work but he seemed to think that I wasn't trying. I did my best, but it wasn't very good, I admit.

When he made fun of me once for my lack of ability I got cheeky with him and got a dreaded "frowny face" and consequently had to write an apology and lines for him. After that, he became sadistic and would threaten me with frowny faces all the time. So far as I remember, I managed to fend him off until I graduated to secondary school.

I reckon he must have been bullied as a kid.

Shit, this site is giving me bad dreams, and I didn't even have a traumatic childhood! Perhaps they should employ a full-time therapist.

@Nathan1989 Thank you for your further reply. I am sorry that you are having bad dreams. That teacher can hardly be called professional. I am in the UK, so understand school years etc.
Mostly, for me, school things were dealt with by school. It was only rarely that my parents heard about bad behaviour or bad work. Though there was one day a term when they went for a conversation with my teachers. Those were anxious days.
I hope those dreams fade.

I'm sure it was a one off. I usually sleep well 😎

But subconscious memories can be insidious things, for sure.
I just stumbled across this! I think writing lines could be beneficial. I HATED writing lines.

I used to get 50 lines for leaving lights on or not flushing the toilet. It wasn't a big deal but it wasn't very effective because I must have written thousands of them, so it can't have taught me much.

@Mrpauldavies That is certainly true, Mr Paul. Thanks for the observation.
