No one acting in Congress should be over 70.... required retirement age

ALL members of Congress...Senate...House...Etc.... should not be over 70 and or can NOT be in there seated position more than 20 years.... Except for the Supreme court where they have a 18 year limitation no exceptions.

This will allow new voices to run our country and get all the old people out and will probably be better off in the long run.

Yeah yeah i know there will be problems initially and yes i get it now ya screaming age discrimination but ya know... i think over time people will accept this the same way they accept the fact that there is age discrimination with Air Traffic controllers and its accepted industry wide.

I am 56, I have that many years worth of life experience. I have become more responsible with every year, but, I can show you guys who have the same length of life experience that I do and they are still total idiots. If I were going to place limits on those who are elected to office, the first would be term limits. Then I would limit the field to only candidates that had work experience for a number of years. No more getting a degree and running for office. Five years employed would be a good start, military time would not count as employment but service would be encouraged. I am also a veteran, being a veteran doesn't magically make me electable material. I am not sure there is any evidence that shows elderly politicians are any better than younger ones, on the other hand, I don't see any indication that "new voices" makes a big difference either.

While I mostly agree, it would be tough to enforce something like that on the grounds of discrimination.

I think having term limits for Congress people would be a reasonable enough workaround so that people don't get to keep their seats for multiple decades and grow increasingly out of touch with the average American.

It's pretty scary to see how technology and social media is tearing the fabric of society apart and they're still arguing about abortion 50 years after Roe v. Wade. Their priorities are decades behind

@TinyViolins Remember look up Air Traffic Controllers... they definitely have age discrimination YET no one ever argues the case. just think it thru.. i can happen and will be rough early on but ultimately it could come to the norm ...

I agree with you and thanks.
TinyViolins · 31-35, M
@black4white Yeah, I read it the first time. It's just that these are two totally different jobs with totally different requirements and expectations. It's not really helpful to compare apples to oranges.

I do agree that our political systems desperately need to be modernized with a youth movement, I don't think ATC limits are a strong enough justification
black4white · 56-60, M
@TinyViolins NO NO.... you are looking too deep..... and yes they are different but we are talking about AGE and expectations..which are about the same...do your job and dont let anything get in your way LOL

i feel what ya saying and thank you. LoL
Good thought. However, the Constitution leaves it up to individual states to decide who is eligible to represent them. You are welcome to press term and age limits for your state, and my state will do what it thinks best.
black4white · 56-60, M
@ElwoodBlues Good thought and you are 100% correct but that does not stop the fact that is would be nice to have age and term limits.... YOU speak facts...i am speaking hypothetically and yes each state has their own requirements.... i get that and thank you
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
This will allow new voices to run our country
Do we have any evidence that this is better? New voices are, by definition, less experienced. Does experienced not matter??

Genuinely questioning.
black4white · 56-60, M
@sarabee1995 None just thinking new minds new ideas.... the old guys in there just want to keep everything the same and not adjust with the times.... proof is roe vs wade... REALLY..still an issue?
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Make congress 10 year max and no benefits
black4white · 56-60, M
@MarineBob I am fine either way... as long as we put some kind of max on how long they can be in and age limit. we will bring in the benefit aspects later... LoL lets just get the foundation rolling
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I have all was been a bit curious why all the guys look 80 there
black4white · 56-60, M
@smileylovesgaming LoL me too its like its just like a fricken retirement home hahaha
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@black4white I know I won't be working at 80. I wonder why they are?
@smileylovesgaming Because they want to and they can. Doing something you want at 80 is different than having to work to survive.
Miram · 31-35, F
That would mean rich people will have to keep up with who to bribe or kiss his assss.

Too much work.
black4white · 56-60, M
@Miram Very true and part of the many reasons why we need this type of change
Lackwittyname · 51-55, M
God how I wish, sadly just is not happening as they would have to be the ones to pass that
black4white · 56-60, M
@Lackwittyname LMAO... ok that is just too funny
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
I believe the Netherlands make people retire at a certain point nationally.
Zonuss · 41-45, M
I think 72 is a more reasonable age 🙂
black4white · 56-60, M
@Zonuss Deal :-)
black4white · 56-60, M
@Fukfacewillie Why not?
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@black4white Anti-democratic and lots of brilliant 70 year olds.
