Alliances aren't what they used to be :(

Russia still seems on the brink of invading Ukraine and all the Ukraine-friendly countries are saying they would definitely impose economic sanctions on Russia if that happened. But they would not help Ukraine fight. Canada is even hesitating about whether to sell Ukraine weapons.

I am glad there isn't going to be a world war over this BUT if I were Ukrainian I would feel totally betrayed.
Eternity · 26-30, M
I mean what do they expect? Russia is nuclear capable and not just a little bit either.

Is the Ukraine worth a nuclear war? Hell no.
Eternity · 26-30, M
@ServantOfTheGoddess if the Cuban missle crisis is any indicator I would imagine we would treat an attack on them as an attack on us
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@Eternity True. I don't find the history of US-Cuba relations very encouraging in other respects though! I have no wish to be the target of vicious sanctions and occasional invasion attempts if we were to elect a truly left-wing government....
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@ServantOfTheGoddess Canada is a NATO nation, end of story.
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
[c=BF0000]This bunch of Yahoos are only "Poking the bear." The only reason they are bowing up on Putin is to encourage a Russian Chinese alliance and destroy NATO. This would usher in all kinds of other disasters, such as the invasion of Taiwan,
They are breaking some eggs to make their globalist omelet. They could care less about Ukraine's autonomy. They don't care about their own![/c]
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
@QuixoticSoul I don't understand why you have to be so damn insulting. Yes! Ukrainians work much harder than Russians or Americans. I love my Ukrainian friends, but I hate my hypocritical government who disregards all things to encourage war.
(That is all ridiculous because taking Russia and Ukraine into one country would be like taking north and south America into one country! ) This is none our business to begin with, but........They are playing each other against each other to form an alliance that will hurt us all. Russia and US should be best of friends. We are the best of idiots!
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
@QuixoticSoul Dude. You have no insight. It seems you have no knowledge of history either. We should all be dancing and singing together. We destroyed hate together!!! and now we have hate. That makes me hate you! We did a dance at the end of war. Anyone who disagrees is cruel and hard!
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
@Oberon1 Nobody insulted you, but I’m half Russian, quarter Ukrainian, and quarter Belarussian - and I’ve lived in and visited those places, still read their local media, etc. I know more about them because these are my original people and culture. I know them in ways you do not, especially since you deal with immigrants - who are the creme off the top, the most driven and dedicated representatives of any group.

And no, we will not be dancing, Russia and the US are geopolitical antagonists for very real and structural reasons.
Ask the Kurds and Yazidis what an alliance with the US is worth. They were left to be slaughtered by Assad despite many promises of support. Fox and CNN just stopped reporting it and the world moved on.
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@BoredDarkLord You are right 😭
SumKindaMunster · 51-55, M
Rest assured IF Russia invades, and I still think that is a big if, the West will be covertly helping Ukraine repel the Russians. Expect covert actions, drone assasinations, and high tech weapon sales to the Ukrainians to help their cause.

While Ukraine isn't Afghanistan, it's not Crimea either and the Russians can expect a lot of resistance to their invasion should they choose to do so. It could get very ugly for Russia, and they've already seen soldiers killed over there during some of their covert undercover operations they attempted to destabilize Ukraine.
HazyDayz · 36-40
It’s because it’s Russia tho. Fighting Russia is a bad idea all around.
SW-User
@HazyDayz Same with China.
HazyDayz · 36-40
@SW-User definitely
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@HazyDayz @SW-User might makes right :(

1. There is no alliance between the Ukraine and western countries.

2. We only send troops, when a country that cannot hit back does something stupid. Like Iraq, or Afghanistan.

3. An invasion of the Ukraine will end Putin, eventually.
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
@Northwest For once in my life, I agree. it may not please you, but I will never let go of our love for each other!
I have eaten radishes out of the ground, and I have shot stingers. I would much rather dance. Let's keep dancing! I

@Oberon1 OK, but I have no idea what you're talking about. Is this Oberon1, or the other personality that blocks me: Puck?
Oberon1 · 61-69, M
@Northwest Radishes Nothing else really matters..
QuixoticSoul · 41-45, M
Everyone was extremely careful not to sign any binding mutual defense sort of treaties with Ukraine, for obvious reasons. Any feelings of betrayal would be misplaced.

Ukrainians should have done a Finland instead of a Cuba, I’m not entirely sure what they expected to happen.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Canada doesn't have any weapons. Ukraine is not worth fighting over.
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@hippyjoe1955 Also typical of your lines of argument: a diversion tactic. Canada isn't "famous" for producing weapons; that's utterly irrelevant to the fact that we manufacture and deal in them.
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
@ServantOfTheGoddess So how about you provide a list of weapons Canada does produce. Seems simple enough. Canada produces a lot of parts of weapons but can you name something that is a complete weapon that Canada manufacturers and sells to the world?
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@hippyjoe1955 Here is quite a lot of recent data.

The point on this is, the Ukraine ISNT in an alliance, is not part of NATO.
ServantOfTheGoddess · 61-69, M
@firefall
Relations between NATO and Ukraine date back to the early 1990s and have since developed into one of the most substantial of NATO’s partnerships.
Agreed. And it wasn't so long ago an invasion of Taiwan would've seemed inconcievable. Now you've got people in the 'West' arguing that a Democratic country has no right to exist because historically it was part of a greater China. It is sad how far the world has shifted.
