Bigger areas have better grounds. So the lightening splits up to the better ground.
Even soil has a certain amount of resistance. Why copper grounding rods can go down for six feet.
Think of it like a battery. Sometimes your negative terminal is not the best ground. And you might be better off to ground on the engine block, which has more metal as ground and less resistance.
