I Love Fishing

My husband and I open a friends fishing shop on the pier early Saturday and Sunday mornings. Last weekend was the beginning of recreational salmon season here. As you can imagine, the boats were out extra early, and by 8:00am, the parking lot was full of trucks and their trailers with no spots left. Crazy though that one motorhome had to come in and take one of the last spots. I, of course, was irritated, but nothing I could do about it.

There is a particular group of guys who come down every weekend for whatever is in season. Sometimes there's 3 of them, sometimes 4, and on rare occasions, 5. They all arrive in a small Toyota truck, with a boat that is at least twice the size. It's always fun to watch them pile out of the truck, as if it's one of those small clown cars.

They all take special care to launch the boat, with one still in the truck driving, and the others being adamant about guiding the boat into the water. One thing I noticed was that there was a bit of a swell last weekend, that even the breakwater couldn't completely protect the harbor from.

Well, somehow, the truck got a little bit too close to the water while on the ramp. And eventually was too far in that it ended up being completely submerged. Luckily, the driver got out the window, before it was too late. Obviously, they couldn't get the truck out of the water or home without a tow truck.

What was really funny (not that that was very funny for them), and surprising, was that they came back the next day. Same boat, different, but same sized truck. Almost the same incident. this time, however, they were able to get the truck out of the water before there was any trouble. Another fisherman with a bigger truck, who saw the incident the day before, helped them out of them get their boat out of the water as they came in about the same time.

I'd say they got lucky. And, I guarantee you, they'll be back tomorrow!
