RIP Gary Brooker. Procol Harem Pianist and Vocalist

"A Whiter Shade of Pale" was the first true progressive rock song I heard and I have never looked back. One of my favorites from back then.

The song was written by Gary Brooker and Keith Reid (who was a poet, but not a professional musician). They were introduced to each other at a party by a mutual friend who said “This is Gary, he writes music...and this is Keith, he writes words”.
Keith asked Gary if he could write music for some of the poetry he had written....and the one he most wanted to hear set to music was “Whiter Shade of Pale”.
The two collaborated for years, a lesser-known combination much like Bernie Taupin and Elton John.

@DragonFruit Keith did write some beautiful lyrics.

Always loved it and it's modern take of Air on a G String - a part of music history, for sure...RIP...

@ReneeT The Hammond sound was so epic - I think Keith Emerson was a big fan...

@fun4us2b Matthew Fisher was the perfect counterpoint to his piano playing. That was one of the only early Procol songs that Robin Trower did not play on. He said he wasn't needed

@ReneeT Wow, that is so cool...

That's a song that will survive the test of time. Brilliant. As was his performance of it. I read he continued performing up to a couple of years ago.

@Ynotisay I have a DVD of a performance they did about 9 years ago at a church in England. They still did it then.

@ReneeT Right on. That's a cool thing to have.

@SilkandLace2 Such a soulful voice. Saw him in concert once in a small venue. Great show

@ReneeT smaller venues are so much better, i have a recording of this song, supposedly Glenn Hughes and Tony Iommi, though i think the story goes that Tony didn't play on it, or he refutes that he played on it, but it is Glenn Hughes and another guitar player i can't remember right now, but also a fitting tribute, what an AMAZING song

Yes...he pioneered prog! I always loved them and saw them twice in concert. Fantastic music and group. Gary was a great composer and pianist to say the least. He will not be forgotten as well as the band. All of our musical heroes are slowly fading away, unfortunately. Now, we have to listen to crap. Thank God neo-prog bands still exist to continue the legacy of the genre. Long live prog!!!
ReneeT · 61-69, M
@caesar7 Very much so. I'm glad that there are still bands out there carrying on the prog tradition. Some great podcasts out there that play this music.

Love PH. Gary Brooker is a true composer and musician in every sense of the word. Grand Hotel blew me away.....still is my favorite but that is debatable. So many fantastic compositions. They don't come any better than this.
