You might need to try the settings on your tv instead of the fire stick.
Mine does the same thing.
sweetiepoo · 36-40, F
@QueenOfTheNerds thanks so much! I think I figured it out! My tv and firestick were already connected via an easy link option pre-installed on my tv so when my tv went to sleep, so did my firestick, but I thought the tv was turning off at first. It was actually just going into power saving, but I do have another tv that turns off. that's not the one in question though. Thanks again for your help!

I do not have firestick so i cant say. But your tv might have it's own power save settings that will do it
sweetiepoo · 36-40, F
@SW-User It does. my cable does.
It has to be a thing, but there is an old school solution to this that only works if you are habitual in routine... by a timer that plugs directly into your outlet.... If you always in bed by say, 11pm, set it to 11:15? Im sure there is a more modern solution that tracks your habits, but if you are always asleep by a certain time this will answer it :)

@SW-User Thanks, I'm not looking to put it in sleep mode, it does that already. I want my TV to be completely off, but I don't think that's an option unless I do it manually or turn it back to the HDMI channel my cable is on. Thnks anyway!

Tell Siri to do it

Look at the settings for your TV.Often there is one for inactivity where if you don't do anything with the TV, change channels etc the TV will turn itself off.Not all TVs have this feature.
sweetiepoo · 36-40, F
@tallpowerhouseblonde That's. This seems logical. I will try it out. Thanks!
There should be an option under your tv's settings.

It's commonly called "Eco mode", "Power saving" or something similar. I actually hate it for the opposite reason.
sweetiepoo · 36-40, F
@HootyTheNightOwl Thanks. yes, I had a long phone conversation and before I was watching the stick so I was really tired and closed my eyes. By then it had already entered sleep mode. I woke up the next morning and my TV was still on in sleep mode. But I will do as others have suggested and check my TV settings.
@sweetiepoo You'll need a timer in this case. That's the only way to turn off the TV from sleep mode.
sweetiepoo · 36-40, F
@HootyTheNightOwl Thanks so much! I looked at my TV settings and realized that the TV I was referring to was not actually turning off during inactivity but going into a power-saving mode. I have another TV that does actually completely shut off, but the TV in question was actually already connected via an easy link option with a CEC that someone else referred to, so I guess I will have to manually put the sleep timer on if I want to completely turn off. Thanks for all of your help!

Tvs used to have timers built in. Im not sure if any of them do anymore that was really oldbut I used to have a TV that I could go to the menu and set Monday to Sunday just like an alarm clock toturn on and off at whatever time I chose.
I used my TV as my alarm like this, but it could also turn off the same way.

You're probably out of luck. TVs that support that feature, switch themselves off automatically by default.

If it's not doing it, then your TV does not support that feature and manual intervention is necessary.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
There is indeed a "thing".

It's called an "On/Off Switch", and even if there isn't one on the TV, which I'd have thought unlikely, isn't there a switch on the mains socket on the wall?
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@sweetiepoo Oh, I see!

Well, I try to be careful, I do forget sometimes.

It is normal practice here, in the UK, that all the mains sockets have switches, so perhaps I thought that fairly typical anywhere; but I realise it might not apply in other countries.

By forgetting, I once filled the house with gas!

I had heated some milk for my breakfast cereal, over a very low light, and forgot to turn the gas-ring off. During the day the tiny flames had gone out, and I returned from work to find the house smelling strongly of gas. It was after dark but fortunately I had the presence of mind not to switch the lights on as I left the front door open and stumbled through to open the back door, to let the wind clear the gas away.
sweetiepoo · 36-40, F
@ArishMell Oh no! Gas!? I hope nobody was hurt!
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@sweetiepoo Fortunately, no.

The house was empty all day, but if someone had been there they would have noticed and turned the gas off pretty quickly anyway.

The real danger was that if I had switched anything electrical on (or indeed off had it been on) any spark on the contacts could have ignited that rich mixture of gas and air in the house, causing a big explosion.

You may find this article helpful, most modern TV's that have HDMI use what's called CEC (Consumer Electronics Control), your TV may call it something else depending on the brand, this will allow you to control both your TV and the FireStick using the Firestick remote, once you have this setup, the sleep function on your Firestick should turn off your TV too:

sweetiepoo · 36-40, F
@spjennifer Yep! It was doing this all along and had no clue! lol I mean I am able to control my tv with my firestick remote, so I do usually manually turn it off, but those other times it actually was going into a power-saving mode instead of turning off. I do have another tv that actually turns off so I probably got it mixed up, but thank you again for your help!

@sweetiepoo Glad I could help 🤪
