I was about to watch that other night!! I like him in it, but do I think he's the BEST actor? No. I do believe he deserved best actor that year. 馃檪 However, I find Phoenix to be more in depth, more emotion, in his roles. He's my favorite actor. But overall I did enjoy Crowe in Gladiator. 馃尮

Wooden, but that's kind of the nature of the character.

I find him a bit that way in his other films too.hiwever I do think he's a good actor. Just aloof maybe sometimes?@DunningKruger @DunningKruger

@Coralmist That's because he often plays these kinds of characters.

I think a more challenging roll is his portrayal of the game theorist in: "A beautifull mind". Way more emotional, fragile, ... and well insane.

There are other actors that also take up rolls like most of the ones that Russel Crowe did. Take Nicolas Cage, who has bigger challenge when he's not playing action movies, like "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Raising Arizona". And Keanu Reeves... who is a great example of the Steven Seagal trope. An actor that has a single facial expresion and is actually made to play a single type of character and thus kinda falls short of being a real actor (imo).

@Kwek00 I get ya on the roles he receives. I guess it's his facial expressions, for me, it can leave his characters not embodied enough or engaging. Other actors have roles similar...with action, spy, etc but don't hold back emotion wise...Denzel comes to mind. Love him. But I do enjoy Crowes films, he's definitely good. Just not my Fave.

I think that Russell Crowe's acting prevents that film from being absolutely godawful.
The writing isn't very good, Joaquin Phoenix gives arguably the worst performance of his life and the rest of the supporting cast isn't much better.
Rather than being too negative (though it's a basically bad film that somehow won the Best Picture Oscar), I choose to highlight Crowe's performance as it's wonderful and gives a reason to watch this film.

LA Confidential was great. Totally high strung avenger

@Slade my favorite movie. Bud White! He鈥檚 great in it as are Pearce and Spacey.

i think that movie is trying to hard. the emperor is to evil just for the sake of being evil.

it had a good start with his different motivations and skill in the scene before he killed his father but after that he became a textbook evil character and a hero is only ever so strong how the enemy he overcomes...

it's adequate for the movie.
He鈥檚 like a Morgan Freeman actor. I like Morgan Freeman. But let鈥檚 be honest here. Morgan Freeman is the same guy in every film. Russell Crowe is the same guy in every film but can at least do accents. Beyond that? Same face, different frock

I really like him, I think he's cool, even though he's totally out of shape rn he's edgy and has that sexy voice.

I don't remember thinking his acting was Oscar winning type when I watched that movie, he won it though, I think in a beautiful mind, that was Oscar winning acting, but I don't think he won for that one

If Russell Crowe had refused the leading role of Maximus....who would of been a good alternative? I like Gerard Butler. His performance in 300 would have made him a good choice.

Loved the movie. I love anything that has to do with Rome. Go figure!
