Are you afraid of ending up your last years in a nursery home?

That would be better than ending in the home of some relative being a burden..
Ofc would be better to not need to go to a nursery home at all but we don't know how the future will be.

I know it sounds morbid but I've always had this feeling that i would never meet old age so it's not something I've ever worried about
Gaiia · F
[@1086727,LadyJ] we just never know..
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
That’s where I want to go or at least assisted living. I do not want any of my kids wiping my ass or being housebound because of me.
Gaiia · F
[@11509,Keepitsimple] exactly my thoughts
Paintedfox · 36-40, F
I watched both my parents die that way. Ive already got plans if I start to need care. Ill go out in the wilderness and get eaten by wolves rather than have my son watch my die in a home. Hell no.
Gaiia · F
[@1070519,Paintedfox] why not a less dramatic way of diying for you just saying?..so it looks natural? 🤔
Paintedfox · 36-40, F
[@536386,Gaiia] for me that would be natural lol I would be honored to live my last days in the wild and go back into the earth 🖤

My mother has been in a nursing home for four years now. When she first went in, we all were afraid it might be a mistake. But they have taken such good care of her and she could not live alone and neither my sister or I could have provided her with the care she needs. I am so relieved that it was the right decision.
Gaiia · F
[@701409,chuck7882] glad to know she's well and likes it there
lovelywarpedlemon · 26-30, F
i'd rather be dead .... i think. maybe i'll feel differently if i make it to that age.
Gaiia · F
[@417823,lovelywarpedlemon] I think the same
Quetzalcoatlus · 41-45, M
I just want to have enough money to get myself into a good nursing home not a shitty one..
Gaiia · F
[@946009,Quetzalcoatlus] that's important
Magenta · F
Yikes. Ugh.
Don't think I would put a loved one in there. Us girls took care of my mom until the end.
Magenta · F
[@536386,Gaiia] Ah that's so honorable. I hope you are able, if needed. 💝
There were enough of us that one wasn't burdened too badly, and she wasn't entirely unable either. And her mind was still sharp at least.
Gaiia · F
[@1173,Magenta] I get quite emotional.. Life and love and those struggles.. We all come to this life and will leave..
💖
Magenta · F
[@536386,Gaiia] It's the truth. Sometimes it's almost more than the heart can take, all the loss. 😔🤗
biggest fear is the mind going and not knowing what's going on around me
Gaiia · F
[@917533,saragoodtimes] but if the minds gone you don't care about what's going on
[@536386,Gaiia] it's the fear while I still have all my faculties
curiosi · 56-60, F
I value solitude, I wouldn't like it in one of those places. I have no family so I don't know what will become of me.
Gaiia · F
[@423488,curiosi] ideally that's what I'd want for me. Independence...
BlueVeins · 18-21, M
No, I don't really fear that. I tend to think nursing homes as we know them will be obsolete by the time I'm an old fart. In the event that I'm wrong, I'll just jump off a bridge or something because I don't want that kind of life for myself.
Gaiia · F
[@4199,BlueVeins] maybe you'd change of mind until you become an old fart 😆
If I keep going at the pace I do I will never make it to a nursing home..

By the way why do jails receive more funding than nursing homes?
The politicians who make the budget don't worry about ending up in nursing homes.
Gaiia · F
[@325375,Majorlatency] elders should be treated better
[@536386,Gaiia] Absolutely, we have a lot to learn. As we strive to prolong age we need to look after the aged..
I lived in worse conditions...so nope.
Gaiia · F
[@912138,OogieBoogie] what conditions?
[@536386,Gaiia] ahhh...id prefer not to speak of it ....its something I'd prefer to forget.

Let's just say it's amazing wjat one can give up for someone they love.
Turkr · 36-40, M
that is really not an easy question to answer.. just wishing the best I guess.. 🤞
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
My mother-in-law is in an assisted living facility (her condition isn’t bad enough for a nursing home, but she can’t really take care of herself either).
They give her meals, take care of her medications, have doctors that visit the facility and offer assistance with bathing as well as having a housekeeping staff. One of the things that is good is that she was able to get the COVID vaccine early.
We could have her live here and take care of her meals and medications, etc., but we’d still need to have some kind of an aide come to the house to take care of certain things.
Gaiia · F
[@475592,Dragon56] would you like to be in that position?
DragonFruit · 61-69, M
[@536386,Gaiia] We were for a little while, and I didn’t mind it....but we’re in our 60s and it’s not getting any easier except for the fact that we’re now both retired and would have more time to spend with her. Sometimes you do what you have to do....not necessarily that you like to be in that position.
It sucks getting old
SkeetSkeet · 90-99, F
I did my clinicals at one and that's where I realized this wasn't the right career path for me hahaha. On top of that it was border line inhumane. After what I seen in there just take me out back and end my life.
summersong · F
Nursing homes scare me. I don’t want to ever live like that.
fun4us2b · 61-69, M
That's why I stay very active - can't allow that...
Gaiia · F
[@64578,fun4us2b] but aging still has consequences... Sometimes even being healthy can't stop them
fun4us2b · 61-69, M
[@536386,Gaiia] It's true - Philip Roth said "Aging isn't a battle, it's a massacre"

But I will fight to keep myself all intact for as long as I can - I often see people younger than me that can barely make it up a flight of stairs...no way - that's not happening on my watch....
I would rather not die like that..
Better to walk off into the snow, sit down and slowly freeze to death.
They say that you actually feel warm at the end, and relaxed..

Let my body feed the wolves and carrion birds.
Gaiia · F
[@349735,onestarrynight] really tough my friend. One becomes like a baby again..
[@536386,Gaiia]
I won't let that happen
SweetMae · 61-69, F
No. Hopefully that will be a long time in the future.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
[@10109,SweetMae] Good evening 🙂 How are you these days?
Gaiia · F
[@10109,SweetMae] hope you always have good health and be surrounded by love
Crazywaterspring · 56-60, M
Yes. I'd rather kill myself than spend days laying in my own shit.
Mrsbetweenfatandfit · 26-30, F
I already promised my father to help him end things if he gets to a point where he doesn’t know who anyone is, where he’s at etc to allow our loved ones to suffer for years on end feels terribly cruel for all involved. He saw his grandmother beg for death for years & so I hope I’ll have someone I can trust to aid me in ending my journey when that time comes.
Powderflask · 26-30, M
Nope. Hoping not to live that long.
PhpPhoenix · 31-35, M
Not at all. I'll probably die well before I'm eligible for a room in one of those, but if I make it that far, it seems like a pretty nice place to spend my last years.
HatterM · 46-50, M
More of ending them broke and homeless, frankly.
