I Want to Write a Book

[ A Week After Publication ]

I have mix feelings on what I experienced through social media after the publication of my first book.

At first, I was surprised by the number of likes my Facebook post got. Prior to that, I was visiting Facebook very rarely, at most once a month. Since that post, I've been checking on it daily and clicking like on posts from my friends. In spite of that, there was no sales converted from there. The first sale I saw was from my son who clicked on buy in the amazon page by mistake.

My second surprise was the number of likes and even more so the number of followers I got in Instagram. I only joined Instagram a week before my book publication. I found fascinating the poetry/writing I stumbled upon in there. A few days after my book publication post, I posted a Valentine's poem to gain attention. I saw a surge in attention but not as close as the book publication. Again, no sales came from there.

My biggest surprise came from Linkedin. The rate of new daily views on my post was keeping steady. In less than a week, I got close to 900 views. Even my boss found me there and announced it to the team the next day. This is the only social media sale I ever got (from my boss). I found fascinating the stats on the views with many from Finland at the beginning even though I only know one person from there.

My second biggest surprise came from Twitter. I finally found effective use of hashtag. The writing community is quite supportive in there. Again, I got a large number of followers (a bit over a hundred) in less than a week. It does seems that Twitter is the real place where authors build their platform. I learned more about author tips and techniques in there than any other place.

My natural let down is the sales. I check daily. I was gladly surprised when I saw the second sale. I have seen nothing else. I'm also surprised of the number of visits I got in Blogger. Close to 140 is less than a week. What caught me by surprise aside from the numbers were the sources: Aside from USA and Venezuela (which I expected), I got views from Canada, Spain, Germany, Ukraine, Australia, France, Portugal.

My first impression is that I'm getting some attention yet my wording of the summary of the book is not engaging enough to translate into sales. When I first wrote this book, my main interest was to leave a legacy with the messages and lessons poured in there through the story and the different pieces of poetry. I was not in there for the sales. Nevertheless, I would lie if I say that the shortage of sales is somewhat of a sour feeling. I'll have to leave time take its course. I could pursue marketing a little bit stronger, but I have other priorities right now.
